New Mazda RX8 Turbo....fast?

I was driving in to work on HWY 401 East, and passed one cruising the limit in the middle lane. I was just talking to myself to keep me from falling asleep during the morning rush and kinda labelled the car and driver as just another guy who buys a sports car but would never use it. I have no idea how quick these things are so I was curious. I was in the fast lane waiting for a van to move over and realized there was a nice stretch of no traffic up ahead. I get ready to casually accelerate when I do my routine mirror check and see this same Mazda all of a sudden 10 cars behind start pulling on me fast. WAKE UP DUDE it's 7:30am!! I dropped it in third doing 60 and he is now 2-3 cars back. I quick shift 4th and run to red line...his pull stops 1-2 cars back. I am in 5th and get her up to 110 and have to stop cause of traffic with him now only 2 cars back. Are these top end cars and what kind of power are they making? I have no idea if its stock or what. Anyone else play with these things in their travels?

Why do you say it was a turbo? To my knowlegde they dont sell them with a turbo from the factory yet. They are a mid 14 sec car.

Yeah I wasn't aware that we had a turbo model in the U.S.

now if they did put a factory turbo on that hitting 350hp and similar torque numbers while keeping all the handling factors the same... I would have a new dream car.

hell no. i blew the doors off one a few months ago. i was cruisin and then a light blue one pulled next to me and we just took off and i was on him like 4-5 cars quick. and my A4 Z only had a lid and loudmouth.

No turbos on RX8's.......you were racing 260 hp RX8.

260HP is overrated I believe and was correct by Mazda. They sux on Torque and I've heard they feel powerless till you get into the high RPM 5-9K

That's typical of and exactly why small displacement motors suck.

I think their mid 14 sec cars stock. Something you shouldnt have to try hard to beat. Its hard to pull on someone even an Rx8 if they already have a good run on you.

That is so true! Been there done that. You have to have a lot faster car to catch up when they floor it first.

To answer your question though, NO, I've never raced an RX8, but I've raced a new 350 Z (similar car class, aren't they?:confused: ) and beat him pretty easily;). Well, technically I didn't blow the guy away, but I was only doing about ~1/2 - 3/4 throttle, and trying to prevent roasting my back tires, and I still stayed ahead of the 350 Z!:D I could hear the guy power-shifting and everything too:p. He called me on, saying "I'll give your big V8 a run:o".....well, sorry dude, but your lil' V6 needs more than what you got!:lol:

argh you ass! :mad: I've always had a thing for the RX-7 and RX-8's looks. would make a nice change from riding in my missile-looking car, although I'd still prefer another f-bod by a long shot because of the power issue. :)

They were originally rated at 250 HP, not 260, and were found to be overrated, so the horsepower claim is now 238 HP.

actually the had a recall on ALL of them for the over-rated hp #'s (some buy-back/$back/free oil changes options)... this is the 2nd time for mazda on this kind of recall...

The RX8 sucks because of the rotary engine.
1. engine recalled for not producing enough HP
2. has absolutely no torque
3. feels slow until 5K RPMs
4. The biggest thing I have to question with the rotary engine is long term durability. My cousin had a RX-7 and it was a mechanical nightmare, as are all RX-7

My daily route to work is 401 & Winston Churchill to 427 south & Dundas between 7:30am-8am. I got involved with this RX8 close to 401 & Hurontario. What about you Pete?
