Hyperspeed97z28 08-02-2004, 03:31 PM I finally got around to taking apart my old 10 bolt that broke...
I got my t/a cover off. I pulled the axle's and pre-load clamps..
The axles are perfect. The gears look great...
There is little metal shavings all over...
I took the abs sensor off and damn, it got mangled... it seems it was rubbing again the thing the gears bolt to, (the posi ) ? and not the gears but the thing with the metal teeth to the left, that has chips off it all over. (where all the shavings came from)
So my question is, How the hell do I remove the posi? Do I have to remove the pinion nut first ?
Thanks in advance..
any install pages would probably help as well ...
Dave89IROC 08-02-2004, 03:40 PM if you have the bearing caps off, just pry it out
Hyperspeed97z28 08-02-2004, 04:16 PM if you have the bearing caps off, just pry it out
Yes I have the caps off. I tried to pry with a screw-driver, But I'll go out and get a pry bar this evening...
Thanks for the fast reply :)
How can ya tell if the posi is bad without driving on it ??
The 3.73 ring and pinion gear look great, I was thinking they'd be in pieces when I pulled the cover... :) if I knew that ahead of time, I probably wouldnt have bought the 4.10 rear. hehe
Mtrhds94Z 08-02-2004, 04:45 PM Yes, it should pry out now.. they are rather tight in there..
I would have loosened that pinion nut too tho if you plan on removing that, [since there's no way with it out to 'hold' that pinion from turning, to get the nut off?]
If you are going to try to reuse this rear, and the gears, just pry it out, but watch for the side shims that will fly out when you do.. [keep the same amount and same ones on each side, if you do intend to reuse it..]
Nittanymarine 08-04-2004, 03:58 AM A pry bar, and some patience are your friends....
Hyperspeed97z28 08-04-2004, 10:35 AM It came out, Just as easy as you guys said :)
I dont plan on reuisng this ...
Now my question is, How can I get the pinion off now that I removed the posi, (wishing I read this first)
also how can you tell if the posi is shot ???
Capn Pete 08-04-2004, 10:54 AM If you use an impact gun to pull the nut off the pinion, then you should be able to hold onto the yoke (the half of the universal joint) to prevent it from turning while you work the impact.
DrewHMS97SS 08-04-2004, 11:27 AM shouldnt have to hold anything with the impact gun. look over the posi for anthing wrong with the gears. if there are no problems, check to see if there are any loose parts. if everything is tight, and the gears look fine, the posi should be ok.

Not a bad idea !
Thanks !
:)
I dunno what went wrong in this rear end, The gears look great with almost no wear on them, The axles are clean as hell, The posi even looks good, There was metal shaving and tiny pieces all over from the part of the posi with the teeth, the abs sensor was somehow rubbing on those teeth... Something sounded loose in this when on the road, massive clunking noises etc.. It would even HOP up, you could feel it and the abs light would go on...
Very weird ....

No prob;). I only know this from experience!:D (well, my Dad has done the work, but I've watched!:)).
DrewHMS97SS 08-05-2004, 12:15 AM the noise has to be from the speed ring.
Hyperspeed97z28 08-05-2004, 11:08 AM the noise has to be from the speed ring.
Speed Ring ??
What could have caused the posi to jolt though ???
It felt like it was binding up or something ...
DrewHMS97SS 08-05-2004, 11:26 AM you were talking about the ring being damaged pretty bad. if it was an auburn posi, check to see how tight the collets that the axels slide through are. could have caused the jolts and pushed the speed ring into the pumpkin.

Well I dont know what the COLLETS are, but I am gonna assume thats what jolted the posi around... Is this common ? Do the collets wear then this happens?
Thanks for the replies so far as well !!
:)
DrewHMS97SS 08-06-2004, 11:43 AM with auburns the whole unit gets loose. this could cause the axels to be out of line and make noise.

Oh there was noise alright, felt like the whole rear was hopping when that posi binded up...
DrewHMS97SS 08-06-2004, 12:09 PM did you end up going 12 bolt?
Hyperspeed97z28 08-06-2004, 04:08 PM No, I bought another 10 bolt with 4.10 gears in it ...
I suspect the rear with the 3.73 gears I bought was crap from the time of purchase... (POSI)
DrewHMS97SS 08-06-2004, 04:53 PM if you ever want another 10 bolt w/ 4.10s and an eaton posi let me know
