TA vs Camaro

Aight guys, got one quick question.

I'm looking into buying a new fbody, and I've come to prefer the styling of the TA versus the camaro. But performance wise I was curious if there's any advantage one has over the other. I realize they have the same engine...but beyond that I'm really unsure. If anyone could enlighten me I'd be forever greatful.

PS Fourth Gen LS1 - mainly ws6 vs. z28

PPS I dont wanna start a flame war between the TAs and the Camaros, so lets keep this civil, it's a tech question, nothing more. :)

WS6 equivalent is the Camaro SS. Trans am = Z28.

No performance advantage between the pontiac and chevy versions, pontiacs have more standard equipment from my understanding though. Comes down to which one you think looks better. :)

Where does the Formula fit in?... isn't that a V8 equal to the Z28?..If so then is it the same as a T/A ?

08-02-2004, 09:37 AM
All the V8s are rated the same, formula, t/a, and Z28 theres no real difference except in weight.

z28spd

actually the camaro is a little less in weight than a trans am...thats an advantage

08-02-2004, 12:50 PM
The weight difference it to small to make a difference. And well its worth the way better interior and styling. IMO. But if you really look around youll see alot less t/a's around than camaros. For like every 4 camaros theres probably 1 t/a, so i would rather get a T/a

Ws6=SS
trans am/ Formula = Z28

doesn't the TA have a slight aerodynamic advantage? not enough to notice i doubt...but a difference none the less.

the ram air setup on the ws6 is more effective than the intake on the TA, Z28 or SS

I liked my 94 TA better than my 95Z. Its just a matter of preference. I love the wing and bumpers on the TA. Plus the interior is miles cooler on the ponitacs! Damn......anyone wanna buy a Z? Hehehehe

A formula is a Firebird body with the T/A engine. No fog lights, wing, etc.

A formula is a great sleeper if you decide to do big things to it. If you look at one and didnt know anything about f-bodies then you would prolly think its a firebird with a V-6. :)

Yeah, a lot of people don't notice the very small, inobtrusive Formula badging (only 1 small decal front and back.) Couple that with all of the v6 guys runnig duals, and you get a lot of cocky rev-hapy folks that look stunned from 5 lengths out in front.

I'm seriously tempted to peel off the Formula stickers altogether. From the side, I look like any other v6 f-body. What fun!

if you do the sleeper formula with the shaved badges, get a quiet exhaust. They won't be able to hear the V8 rumble and think for sure its a V-6, maybe get some of those non-polished V6 exhaust tips too

the sleeper theroy. i dunno, i dont think it matters either way. they will either try to own you, or realize that you have a bad car and want to see how fast it is.

They are the same WS6 = SS. Trans am = Z28 its just the t/a weight just a tiny bit more than the comperable camaro due to the body having more curvers and odd shapes. Making the camaro just a tiny bit faster but not by much. But then again I'm not totaly sure so that you might wanna look it up and not quote me on that.

thats cool you posted this cuz i would like to hear peoples opinions. my Z28 is sweet. but honestly i would trade my Z28 with the Z06 rims, hooker headers and everything else i did for an 02 T/A WS6. it looks way better than an SS and the interior on the T/A are way better than the camaros IMO.

hmm...i always found the camaro interior to be more pleasing (especially the cockpit like feel of the 93-96)
i do agree though, 98-02 t/a's and ws6s look nice:cool:

Ouch. :irk:

That's strange, I prefer the LT1 TA look. The LS1 WS6 hood looks way too flashy and garish for me, like an overstatement. I guess I just prefer a more subtle statement of power. Like rims so deep they look like a tunnel. :D

For 98-02 Pontiac cars, I prefer the base Firebird/Formula hood over the 4-nostril Ram Air setup for the WS6 cars.

I think that GM did well when they redesigned the Pontiac front ends for 98, but I don't like the new Camaro front ends as much. To me it's like they flip-flopped. I like the 98-02 Pontiac noses over the 93-97, and the 93-97 Camaro noses over the 98-02.

I happen to own a 96 Formula and a 2001 Camaro V6 (wife's car)...

Everyone has their own taste.I just dont like the looks of the early 4th gen firebirds. They just are plain and unattractive to me.I guess it depends on the individuals preferece though. Some like the early 4th gen f-bodys looks others like the late models.

I love the way 93-97 camaros look better than 98-02 on the outside, but I like the interior of the 98-02 a lot better. I know there is not much of a difference, but it is a huge improvement I think.

Also, I like the exterior and interior of 98-02 firebirds, trans ams, and ws-6s better than 93-97

Thats my opinion

everyone has their own taste but i never heard of someone saying they liked the base hood better.

WS6 is just a suspension package.

WS6 is just a suspension package.

with 3rd gen's that was true but with new ones a WS6 is the ram air option
you will not see a new ws6 without the ram air package.

IMO both the trans am and Z28 need the ss or ws6 package. they dont look right with out the hoods and wheels. i personally like the lines of the camaro better. i dont ike the bulgyness of the TA as much

DrewHMS97SS

the rear end of the ta doenst do anything for me. i kind of like how the doors have more curve in them though. i also dont care for the way the side view mirrors dont meet with the lines of the fenders.

Trans Am is the only trim that stands out and screams "V8" at you. Z28's and Formula's only have minor detail differences from the v6 models. You have to scan Camaros for a z28 badge, or exhaust tips (if those are even still stock).

TA's on the other hand are instantly discernable as a V8: front fascia, ground effects, high-rise spoiler, rear fascia - all unique to the Trans Am.

the sleeper theroy. i dunno, i dont think it matters either way. they will either try to own you, or realize that you have a bad car and want to see how fast it is.

I bought my car from a Detroit street racer. It had stock GM wheels and a single exhaust. When you opened the hood, all you saw was a stock-looking engine with an Accel 300+ ignition box and headers. The 58mm TB didn't stand out, nor could you see the braided steel nitrous line tucked up under the cowl heading into a a stealth under manifold (200HP) fogger kit.
It has a stock 10-bolt rear with 4.10 gear, so there's nothing to clue you in there. But, if you crawl under the car, you see some of the goodies. HAL QA1's, Eibach Launch kit, BMR Torque Arm, external fuel pump, subs.
Inside, it's a different story, though. No real attempt to be a sleeper inside. Monster Tach w/shift light , Scanmaster, pillar-mounted fuel and oil pressure meters Cheetah shifter w/tBrake button.

The sleeper illusion is gone as soon as the key is turned though. The car has a loud low-toned lope and even older people pull up next to me to tell me that it sounds good. It's a trip.

i can imagine the car on a 10 bolt. either you are insanly lucky or some black magic is protecting your rear end. 4.10s + any power = BOOM. looks like a nice setup, but im in disbelief with the 10 bolt.
