1982 v-6 questions

I recently bought a 1982 belinetta, it have the 2.8 v-6..
Is it possible with many mods to get allot of horsepower out of this motor or should i go to a v-8?
Im not looking to race nascar just be able to smoke the average hot rod...

the chances of you beating any hot rod with a 2.8 modded to the max, is the same chances of me getting 100hp out of my new Hurst shifter knob...........you do the math.......
