Need Help Removing Passenger Airbag on 95 Z28
The only person who ever rides in my Camaro with me is my 4 year old son... If the whole family goes anywhere, we take the van...
He's too young to ride in a seat with an airbag, but if he rides in the back of the Camaro he gets carsick. It's really cramped back there and he can't see out hardly at all.
If he rides in the front seat he does fine. I let him do it once in a while (pleas no speeches on how dangerous this is, I know it and don't need a lecture on it) and if I scoot the seat far enough back he sits so low in the seat that I don't think the air bag would come near him anyway. He's a good 4 feet from the dash and probably 2 feet shorter than where an adult's head would be targeted by an air bag...
Anyway, I'd like to get him a booster seat (he's big enough that he rides in a booster seat in the van and the K5 now anyway) for the Camaro and remove the passenger air bag so we can go Cruisin' for Chicks! He loves to ride in the Camaro.
So has anyone ever removed their air bag with intentions of leaving it out and covering the hole with the dash piece that was on top of the air bag?
Can I pull it out and just unplug the wiring to it and reinstall it?
Thanks,
Paul

Re: Need Help Removing Passenger Airbag on 95 Z28
my grandma had hers removed in her steering wheel in her 96 monte
she sits so close it could kill her if it came out
i think the dealer did it and they might be your best bet since airbags are dangerous when doing work on them

Re: Need Help Removing Passenger Airbag on 95 Z28
I read through the factory service manual last night, and they don't show a procedure for actually intentionally deactivating ONLY ONE of the two airbags...
However, they do show how to deactivate the passenger side airbag temporarily for service work. Basically you remove the fuse and the plug to it, remove the airbag itself, and do your work. Then reverse procedure when done.
The bag comes out by removing the glove box and pulling the bag through the glove box hole. It looks really simple in fact, but it always looks simple in the service manual...
So I figure I'll give it a try, and the worst that could happen is that the "Airbag" light will stay lit up on my instrument cluster. I doubt it will interfere with the function of the driver side bag, but I may have to do more reading and wire tracing and such to determine that for sure.
Any help in that regard would, as always, be welcome...
I'll post how it works out if anyone is interested. I can even post pictures of how the airbag comes out and where it resides behind the glove box if someone can host the pics for me. Again, only if anyone is interested.

Re: Need Help Removing Passenger Airbag on 95 Z28
I'd be interested in knowing how you get it out through the glove box area... I tried removing one from a junked car from under the dash and it was a PITA... I lost my patience with it and ended up removing the entire dash pad and pulling it out that way... Might want to do a search on ebay or someplace to see exactly how the whole pass airbag bracket looks.. It's bolted in several places of course, and the bottom section of the bracket is set into the metal bracket for the dash.. It's a rail that I believe runs the partial or full length of the dash, at the bottom... After you unbolt it you may have to lift up on it slightly to get it out from that rail.

After you get it out, throw a spare tire on it real hard. I head that it will explode and shoot the tire way up in the air!
hehehe, make sure there is adult supervision
