Burn outs?

I was talking to a co-worker and he is heading out to some car show in a month and they're going to apparently have a burn out competition, and though I cant do too well, I wanted to atleast compete for grins.

I've never even looked at drag tires before, so I'm clueless on what to do, and espicially, what not to do so I dont blow anything. And I dont want to go with my BFGoodrich tires and blow them off at how much they cost. What can handle a nice long burn? Thanks!

Well I definately wouldn't get drag radials just to roast them off in a burnout competition.

I think what you want is a set of skinny, hard, crappy tires that you care absolutely zero for other than they continue to hold air. In this event there is clearly the possibility of having too much grip.

And expect to be the only guy in the contest with a manual tranny. You'll probably need to shift up to 2nd, but don't do it too soon or you might not get them smoking again. About a week ago there was a burnout competition down in Wildwood, NJ with one stick-shift car (yes, it was an F-body) and that appeared to be his technique. You could see the rear wheels stop briefly during the upshift.

As to the appropriateness of this forum, well, I guess it isn't too much less so than talking about zero mph in a straight line with an ET of infinity in the drag forum.

Well, I've thought about this myself and if it were me, I'd just go down to a junkyard or used tire store and find some el-cheapo 5-hole steel wheels and some grubby old tires, size doesn't really matter as long as they fit in the wheel wells.

The other issue to be concerned with is brakes. I'd DEFINITELY have a line-lock installed. Consider this: a line lock is a hell of a lot cheaper than a set of pads, rotors and possibly calipers by the time you were done riding the brakes the entire time.

You CAN dump the clutch in 2nd and not even have to start out in 2nd. And if you're quick enough it shouldn't be too much of a problem to shift into 3rd and get 'em REALLY blazin'! :D
