Got my GMMG exhaust put in today....

well, it finally got here, after like 3 weeks of waiting. I got it through a GP on ls1tech.com. Man, I hard a hell of a time with this install.

First off, I didn't have the correct tools to cut the stock pipe. I used what was availiable, a grinder and a hacksaw. I cut the pipe right before the rear end, like the instructions said. Guess what, that doesn't leave enough clearence for the pipe to come off. So I cut it again right before the muffler, again with the grinder/hacksaw .

I got to put the new muffler assembly in, not enough clearence, so a I jacked up the car as far as the jack would go, and with a friend's help, we forced her on there and got the car back down on the stands before we killed ourselves.

The pipe from the muffler didn't want to fit on the new I pipe, so that had to be "convinced" to work.

The stock hangers, not even close to what GMMG gave me to hang this thing. I had to go down to Advance, pick up a set of universal ones, and "convince" them to work.

Got all the clamps tight, time to start the car. HOLY F'N POO! This is the best sounding thing I've ever heard. GMMG + LT1 = CREAM IN PANTS. Took my friend who has a 00 SS w/loudmouth for a ride, and he really liked the low strong and "healthy" sound of the car. Now I can't wait for my Mecham Power oval tips to get here.

Re: Got my GMMG exhaust put in today....

dude, you sound the same as me
i got in on the gp as well but i still havent got part of the exhaust to hook it all up (stock i-pipe, dude before me had flowmaster)
i'm getting one though tomorrow and i had a few questions for you
did you have to "crush" the pipes where they go together right before the rear end? i got about an 1/16 to an 1/8 in around the whole thing
let me know asap please
i plan on putting this on tomorrow or saturday
i am anxious as all he** because i got it like 2-3 weeks ago and i haven't been able to install it

also, on the rear end assembly going over the rear end, you couldve removed the 3 bolts that go into that bar above the panhard rod (the bolts are on driverside), then just slid the bar down
i tried jacking it up as far as i could but couldnt get it to work, i did this and it was a cinch- and this wasnt even having the jackstands high at all

Where the pipes come together right by the rear, I started to tighen down the 2 nuts by hand, and thy only went a little way, so I was worrying a little. But it turns out my father had purchased a 77pc air tool set without my knowledge (something that could have been brought to my attention YESTERDAY!), and we have a compressor, so I hooked that mother up and tightened her down nice and tight. Had plenty of room. Will take pictures if you want.

As far as getting the pipes over the rear...
I did not know you could do that, and I don't know too much about how the rear works, so I wasn't about to mess something up. Like I said, it took a little bit of "convincing" to get that pipe over, but it's done now.

I still think the passenger's side hanger is a little lower the the drivers, maybe a half an inch. So when my tips get here in a couple days I'll try to adjust my fabbed creation of a hanger

If you or anyone runs into problems with the hangers like I did, I can snapsome pictures of how I rigged it up for reference.

Re: Got my GMMG exhaust put in today....

Mine went in quite easily.. Here is a cut and paste of my post on ls1tech.com...

Excellent!!! That is what I have to say!! To anyone who is still waiting, it is well worth it.. I got mine today and took off work early to install it.. Took about 2 hours from start to finish... A few pointers on the install... Get the rear of the car up as high as you safely can.. This will help facilitate removing the old exhaust.. Note I said safely... The car has to get up pretty high for using jack stands.. Make sure you have it sitting solid!! Secondly, cut as high up towards the axle as you can.. The less you have remaining on the back end of the exhaust, the easier it will be to pull out.. Finally, make sure you test fit the I-Pipe into the chambered section before fitting it into the car.. I had to hammer the I-Pipe a tad to make it slide in easily..

Other than that, piece of cake even for an old dude using jack stands... This system sounds great.. Absolutely perfect if you ask me.. Thanks to GMMG and Ron for this great deal...

Did your stock hangers work fine? Is there a difference between LT1 and LS1 hangers? The pictures they sent of the hanging system looked nothing like my car

I'll take a picture of my custom hangers tomorrow, I'm interested in finding out if they are different for the LT1s vs. their LS1 bretheren

Re: Got my GMMG exhaust put in today....

just installed mine today with my uncle
absolutely insane sounding
not as loud as the cutout i had (cut the old exhaust off and left it that way til i could install the gmmg) but it sounds so sweet
has a nice smooth tone all the way up to redline, unlike my flowmaster did before
everything fit great and the tips weren't all that bad to line up and get them where they needed to be

overall, i'm definately a satisfied customer
let's wait til i get my middie headers and install them
that will make it even louder and deeper

Re: Got my GMMG exhaust put in today....

ok, got a picture of my hangers, and got a chance to take a look at the hangers on a couple different f-bodies, and they are different. Here is a picture of the passenger's side hangers off my car, the driver's side is the same except it's only the piece on the left:

http://www.radford.edu/~rvandenhe/Pictures/hangers.jpg

Piece on the left bolts to the body, and the piece on the right bolts to the exhaust and slides into the piece on the right

They are different then.. The passenger side looks close to the same, but drivers side has a totally different bracket.. I'm sure with some fab you can get it hung okay though..

Re: Got my GMMG exhaust put in today....

I have them hung on there now with some universal hangers I messed around with, but they don't hold it in place too well, they move around side to side a bit. I'm going to try to buy a pair of stock ones off someone parting their car.
