Switching to ZR1 Rims

I have a couple quick questions.

How will running these rims and 275/40 tires effect my ride height, performance and speedometer??? Compared to the stock 98 z28 rims with 245/50/16?

thanks

Re: Switching to ZR1 Rims

shouldn't make any difference if it's a 17 inch wheel.

Re: Switching to ZR1 Rims

If you drag race it frequently, expect it to slow down a little. But it will handle much better.

Re: Switching to ZR1 Rims

Why would it slow me down? I thought the ride height was the same...so no gear ratio changes.

I also thought a ZR1 rim would be just as light or lighter than the stock Z rims.

anyone else???

Tire width... more friction... less speed...

Re: Switching to ZR1 Rims

Im going to have to disagree on the ride height not changing. It will depend on the rubber that is on the rim. When I went to ZR1s my ride height did go up. I can take a picture if you like, the outer diameter of the stock rims with rubber and the zr1s with rubber is about an inch difference.

Nope, the rim/tire combo will be heavier than stock. It's actually a pretty heavy for being aluminum.

Re: Switching to ZR1 Rims

I switched from my stock rims and tires 245 50 16s to 275 40 17s Zr1 rims and tires and my ride hight went up 1 inch, I measured it before and after, also my cornering sucks even more now only good thing is I can lunch harder and I don't spin tires when I shift gears. I did not go to the track yet with new tires and wheels so I don't know if there is any improvement.

Re: Switching to ZR1 Rims

Instead of cutting off your stock rim and welding the ZR1 rim onto your stock wheel center wouldn't it be easier to replace the enitre wheel?

Seriously, the rim is a PART of a wheel. The wheel is the entire thing. It's like calling a car a "transmission".

Re: Switching to ZR1 Rims

So a camaro SS will be slower and handle worse than a z28 because of the rims?

Would 17 inch z06 rims be a better choice?

Re: Switching to ZR1 Rims

The difference with the speed will be minimal. Your not gonna be like, "Oh I was topping out at 45mph in 1st gear and now with the new wheels I top out at 43MPH"

They look good.

Plain and simple.

Re: Switching to ZR1 Rims

I doubt the 17" changes the ride height by a whole inch. That would mean that the outside diameter of the tire changes 2", that is a drastic change. Theoretically a 275/40 17" tire and an outside diameter of 25.66" and the 245/50 16" tire has a diameter of 25.65" (of course the outer diameter will vary from tire manufacturer to tire manufacturer). They should be similar. We are getting two opinions: It changed the ride height by an inch (which means the tires got 2" bigger), and it will increase the gap in the fender well (which means the tire got smaller). So, just realize, they are approximately the same diameter, which means no gear changes, no noticeable ride height changes, etc. It might affect your acceleration, but nothing too major. And the handling should be better as well.

Re: Switching to ZR1 Rims

I also thought that my ride hight would go up 1/2 inch, then someone on told me, it might have been on this board that tire profile is smaller on 17s then 16 inch going from 50 to 40 so the actual diameter of the wheel and tire its going to be the same so there would be any difference. So I decided to measure at 3 different places to see if there is going to be any diffrence, I don't know why but there was increase of 1 inch on all 3 places. After I put on those wheels I went to look for lowering springs because I didn't like my new ride hight.

PS: I didn't say that z28 handle better then camaro ss, ss have better suspension or that ss is slower then z28 because of the rims.
