When you smell the gas, pop the hood and check to see if there is a puddle or any dripping around the injectors. O-rings can go bad and let gasoline slip out of the injector socket. I would recomment looking at the intake manifold and also the fuel rails.

Check your gas tank (Neck and such) the back wheel well (back, drivers side) should come out (unscrew it) and reach up under there till you feel the neck of the gas tank, follow it down until you feel where the tank neck is (or should be) Wielded to the tank, is the neck moves at all where the wield should be, then the tank needs repaired, another way to check it look under the back end of your car, on the heat shield, above the muffler, and if there is gas residue, then your tank is leaking.

Just make sure you place down some absorbant matts, as you don't want to get gas all over the ground, Its really hard to get gas on the ground from a break so high on the tank, but you still want to make sure, just in case.

And if your anything like the people that helped me (There good people, stubborn as all hell though) then remember to put out anything your smoking, and don't try to see in dark places with your lighter ~_^

I am horribly tired, so I'm not sure how thoughtout my advice sounds, but all in all, check your tank, 3rd gen fbodies, especially the earier ones, had problems with wield points on the tank.

hope it helps,
