Rear End Options

As you all know, the little 10 bolt is gone. I was talking to a couple shops and they were saying that with the Ford 9", once you weld on the brackets for the torque arm, it whines like a b!atch.

Whats your guys' take on this. Would a 12 bolt with the C clip eliminator be the proper way to go without a lot of noise and keeping that "bullet proof" strength I'm looking for?

Also, anyone have any good hook ups on were I can get one? I want to stray from doing the modifications myself. I really want a bolt in piece.

Thanks in advance.

Rule #1: Nothing is bolt in...there are always little pieces that you have to buy to keep it from being a chop job. (eg: my $120usd sway bar lowering brackets)
Rule #2: Nothing bulletproof is not going to whine. This is what I have been told.
Rule #3: Make a budget, then double it and triple the amount of time it takes to work the bugs out.
Rule #4: no 12-bolt is bullet proof...or any rear for that matter. A lot of it has to do with the set-up and parts used.

If you don't have $3500 cdn ready to drop on a rear, don't even start because that is what it will cost. Sorry to sound negative but my 9-inch cost me twice as much as I thought it would.

well it all depends on what your budget is gonna be. let us know then we can make suggestions for you.

but if you want top of the line i suggest you check out www.currieenterprises.com

they have some expensive and some inexpensive options for you. and its all bolt in custom built to order stuff.

check out there 8" light wieght gear case as well, its not a over kill strip unit and its deffinatly tougher then the stockers.

I just paid off one of my MC so I have the funds available to do this.

I dont however want to jump into buying the first one I see. I want to spend some time getting all the info and all the suggestions first.

Andy, how loud is this "whine". My 10 bolt used to whine too and if its about the same then I dont really care. If its really loud to the point you can hear it all the time and even from out side the car then... no thanxs.

BTW... I know nothing is really "bullet proof". Thats why I put it in qoutations. ;)

Anyone got any thoughts on the 8" 10 bolt. I was just talking to a shop and he was saying that the 8" 10 bolt and the 12 bolt are of similar strengths. I'm not sure if I should believe that or not....

A ford 9" is definatly going to be the quietest solution. I don't know which shop you talked to but they are smoking crack.

My 9" dosen't make a peep.

Send me a PM and I can hook you up on the price.

I dont know if it makes a diferance but the shop asked me what year my IROC was.

Perhaps they 4th gens dont make much noise... I have no idea:confused:

The only difference is that the 4th gens are wider by a couple inches per side.

My rear makes noise mostly because it was originally set-up wrong and when I had it re set-up, I guess the pattern had already worn in. I have also heard that Richmond gears (what I have) are also louder than average.

The locker can also be a bit hard to deal with when driving around a parking lot because of gears locking and unlocking...hence the name;). I wanted more durability than driveablitiy. Other than slower corning speeds, you'd never know you had a locker.

Honestly, I'm happy that I spent the money on the 9-inch. Its the only solution that I know will handle 6000rpm clutch dumps on slicks with gobs of HP (Something I hope to have some day). I wouldn't waste my money on a 12-bolt or 10-bolt but the 8.8 Ford rears have caught my eye:).

Spend the money on a 9-inch. Also, if you aren't going to go drag racing, get a posi with 31 splines. My locker and 35's are overkill now but I have "larger" dreams;)

One of the shops was IWE Rear Ends Only. The other shop... I cant remember what they were called but I was recommended to them through SNK's race it. They both said the same thing.

Theres no way I'm gonna get a locker... I just going to stick with the posi set up with some 4.11's.

When I heard these shops telling me that the ford 9" was really noisy I was suprised. I know a number of you guys here have them and I dont remember anyone complaning about the noise from the gears.

well it depends if you want a drag ready rear end or not, id go with the 8" currie rear end.

but then again id just throw in another stocker, BUT if i had to go to aftermarket it would be the currie 8" since it would be a lot tougher and im not into slicks and drag.
