Rim stains

I've got some stubbon black tinted stains on my rims, can you guys suggest something to get them off? Unfortunately they won't just wash off.

Sorry, forgot to add that. They are the stock 97-99 16" silver 5 stars.

Well, they are clear coated, so just use a mild polishing compound, I would use Turtle Wax Polishing Compound, comes in a little white tub, its cheap and should be rough enough to get the job done.

Do you keep the wheels waxed? Waxing and regular cleaning can help prevent this kind of thing usually.

I've never used the TW polish compound Kevin is referring to, but any good paint cleaner or swirl remover will likely work too. Something like Meguiar's Body Scrub, 3M SMR, etc...

Thanks for the tips guys, I'll pick up some of that stuff this weekend. I haven't kept my wheels waxed, but I will from now on.

Try what you have right now.

My stock silver wheels get a brown stain where the spokes join the outer rim. I use the clay to get it off, as it doesn't wash off. You might try clay before you get into a real abrasive.

I second the polishing compound. I used it when I had a set of 97-99 5-spokes on my car, and it worked well. I don't know if I would use it on the entire wheel, though...just the trouble spots.

I used Rubbing Compound on the inside of my rims then I followed with Chrome and Metal Polish and it worked well. I don't know if I would use it on all of the outside b/c its pretty abrasive but maybe on a few small spots.
