Just an update on a thread from last week regarding the 170 hp 2.4 and the Cobalt SS and SS sedan.

Apparently this engine has been delayed until '06. That's why those two SS models have been deleted from the Chevy website.

Hopefully when the 2.4 becomes available....so will those two Cobalt SS models.

I seem to remember you saying something like that. Anyway....looks like it won't be around for the '05 model year.

This is the same motor that will power the base Solstice. GM may be trying to get power at 180 hp before it's released.

still, i hope they don't call it the SS when it does come out. I don't know of LT sounds all that good, but it's definitely better than calling it the SS if it's not the top dog of the model lineup.

I hope is is not called SS also.

The should offer the 17"s as options on the 2.2L Cobalts for those that want the look bu can't afford the S/C SS.

I read that the 2.4L G6 will be out in May '05. It seems odd that they would show/advertise the engine and then pull it 3 mo. before its release. Upping the HP seems like a logical reason.

I'm thinking that they should call it SS.

A well developed, 170-180 hp, $16-$17,000, package....would make a great entry point for the SS brand.

This is an incredibly important segment......don't assume that it's beneath or unworthy of the SS name. This segment will be populated by Scion tC, Mitsu Ralliart, Civic Si and others.

Chevy needs to step up.....right here, right now....with a Cobalt SS models that hits this segment's center of mass.....with a bullseye.

Yeah, I deffinatly see that. I think if the SS is going to be available for the 2.4 as well as the 2.0 SC, the same 18 inch wheels should be available. Maybe give the 2.0SC a different hood with a scoop or something? I think that the 2.4 Cobalt will deffinatly go up against the tC for the battle of the new-commers.

I'm wondering if they're going to have a sub $10k stripper model like they now have for Cavalier.

Talk about ideal entry level car for the tuner crowd. :D

Not with the Aveo in there. The Aveo will fill in the cheap-o model while the Cobalt can move to a higher level.

You can still probably get a 2.2 powered Cobalt for cheap. The Ecotec aftermarket its large.

Just on paper, one would think by adding a nice turbo to a 2.2L stripper 'balt it could give a supercharged 2.0L SS 'balt a run for its money... and for a few bucks less. (Not to mention the whole sleeper aspect.) :D

I hope the reason is they are after more power (180hp would be nice) but its hard to beleive GM would have an engine all ready to go and they "wait....we need more power!"

Unless---they wanted more power for the Solstice and then other
applications just got the higher power by default.

Still....I will try to ignore my cynical nautre;) And hope for a few more ponies. The manula trans for that should be with for launch at the same time then too.

i don't think anyone will argue that Chevy needs the 2.4L with 170hp+ in the Cobalt. But I don't think it's a good idea to stick the SS badge on there. Ralliart/SRT/SVT/AMG are entirely different from SS. unlike SS those aren't a trim level, they are in-house hot rod labels. so for example when Ralliart does a car, they have the option of making as many levels of performance as the house will budget them for. But the SS isn't a special "works" team, it's just a trim level, so having two or more SS cars of the same model just confuses the situation. GM should establish their own special team and do it justice if they want to have the same setup and reputation as the established ones. using the SS badge for this, just isn't the way to go.

GM has a performance division....GMPD. They will develop performance vehicles for various GM brands. The GM brands will use them as they see fit. GMPD will develop Redlines for Saturn, V-series for Caddy, GPX for Pontiac, some SS models and a couple of "Z" cars ;) for Chevy.

Some SS's will be the result of GMPD....some not. Chevy will have the flexibility to decide.

What??? Do you want a link to Bob Lutz saying the 2.4 has been delayed until '06?

Some of us here, have enough initiative to do our own investigative work and piece a story together. If there is something here that you find implausible....let's hear what you have to say.

There is no official link about a 5th gen Camaro......yet looky....we have a whole forum dedicated to it.
