Driveline Clunk.. Driveshaft?

I have a loud clunk in the driveline of my car that started yesterday for no apparent reason. It clunks everytime I shift into gear, so i pulled the diff cover yesterday and everything looks good in there, the diff is all together, the gears look great and there aren't any shavings. So I pulled the driveshaft out today and here's what I found:

I wouldn't think the driveshaft should be missing a tooth right there, but I wasn't positive so I wanted to post and find out. I put a magnet down in the driveshaft and pulled out metal shavings also. The trans was rebuilt last year and the fluid level is fine there. So I'm thinking either the missing notch in the DS is causing the slop = clunk in the driveline or something is messed up in the tailshaft because it does it in every gear. Any thoughts on the DS spline?

I just posted about the samething with my driveline. I wanna know what causes that too. Its gotta alot of slop as you call it when you shift it into gear like going from neutral to drive or reverse but I thinking its in the tranny somewhere, this cant be normal..

I'll keep an eye on this post to see what they have come up with.

mine's a manual, so if it's a trans problem, it's probably not the same thing.. But I'll keep you posted just in case.

Mine has a clunk also... I suspect my rearend however. But I don't think one spline missing from the DS will cause enough play to get clunk. Might be u-joints. I plan on checking mine later today.

not sure if this helps you guys, but mine currently is bad u-joints in the rear of my driveshaft, I just replaced my transmission and noticed the u-joints were bad while I had it out, thats whats been causing mine and it still is :)

Thanks for your input, but mine ended up being none of the above. The u-joints are both good, the trans mount is still ok, and there isn't any significant play in the driveline when I compared it to that of my dad's silverado. But I found that the Torque Arm mount was missing... there was a mount on the trans, but no other piece, so I went out and got a new one and bolted it in... no more clunk. The clunk ended up being the front u-joint banging against the torque arm which was flailing around under there everytime the driveline engaged. A simple and easy enough fix I guess. Thanks for all the input though!

whenever i hear someone tells me they have a clunk when shifting into a gear i tell them to check there tranny mount, they go bad all the time and are one of the easiest things to replace.
