A friend of mine is interested in buying a 3rd gen F-Body within the next month and he asked me for some advice on what to look into to as far as problems commonly associated with an 84' camarol.
What are some common problems associated with 3rd gen F-Bodies? Particularly during the 84' model.
The only thing I could tell him initially is a compression test. Since its almost 20 years old, a compression test should definitely be done.

Only problems I know about are that its a 20yr OLD car. And it couldn't had many problems to still be running after all those years.;)

generally around 15 years or so all the major stuff (if at all will be braking or broken, really depends on the car) so if its still kicking around at 20 years its probably pretty good to go and things have been taken care of, but you MUST expect to have little problems at least, like everything leaking (tranny, oil, coolant gas:D ask me how i know:mad:, oh yea and BRAKES:( , but hey this car and this message board are a learning experience and taught me alot so and its cool to have an older car.
i know alot of stuff "in theory" but i would have never gotten the experience without my third gen.
so in conclusion, if the car is decent, get it and although i dont like not being able to drive my car when it craps out on me, at least im learnig how to do something new each time
ps. expect a little bit of smoke at start up (valve seals are notorious for leaking)

oh yea and one other problem with the early f body 145 (Lg4 depending) whopping horsies! so dont expect a rocket ship and dont think its broken when you test it haha
but the torque is a fun kick in the pants:)

My only recommendation is to get good paint cause I'm sick of seeing beater 3rd Gens out there, you people know who you are, lol. Other than that the statement about things either breaking or being broken already is probably 100% accurate, these guys you will replace EVERYTHING over a lifetime unless it was babied.
