What parts make the LT1 Trans Am so much heavier???

what are they? I am putting my car on a diet and want to know what I need to ditch?

heres what I am doing

Weld draglites replacing the heavy 17's
deleted EGR AIR
removed spare tire
Removed pass seat leather

is this good what should ti weigh in at?

is it the sound system and the leather that makes the tA's heavy or the body pieces?

there are alot of things you can ditch if you want to loose alot of weight. Im sure someone will chime in with the weight lists of all the things you can ditch. You can go full tubular front end ( k member, control arms etc )

But is this a race car, because i certainly couldnt imagine driving with out all the creature comforts im used to. My theory is if its a street car, just make more power to compensate for your comfort features.

I think what makes T/As heavy relative to other F-bodies is just the fact that they seem to all be loaded with options. Just about every option from power locks to the sound system to leather seats adds weight and T/As have it all. Not to mention extra body cladding on some of the cars. Youll probably not be able to get the car under 3500lbs unless you decide to go all out on weight reduction.

Your list looks pretty good. You coould also ditch teh rear seats if you dont use them...

Flip up power head lights, power leather seats, more body cladding, more speakers, possible CD changer.

i removed the guard shiel directly underneath the seats that just protected the exhaust pipes. i did it because my pipes were hitting it causing a real bad rattle. im not sure if the trans ams have it, but on my camaro the shield probly weighs about 20 pounds.

Hey Nick,

Best thing to do is loose, the back seats, spare tire/jack, stock wheels for drag lights then also loose the stock back suspension stuff for lighter parts. Most torque arms, LCAs and Panhard bars weigh a lot less than stock and work better. You can also take out the sound deadning under the carpet. Past that, heat/ac, crash absorbers, ditch those stock fronts for some 10lb race seats. But i think that kill it from being a street car.

I just looked up 2 old issues of Car and Driver, and the T/A is 15lbs heavier than a Z. Both were 6spds 98's, and had cloth interior so they both were probably strippers. I can't imagine anything would be different on LT1 cars.

Maybe this is retarded... but wouldn't it be neat if there was some sort of mod that allowed you to removed the back seats and passenger seat and put them back in easily at will? Like some sort of locking device or what not..

I always thought that would be nice. You could slag off 90ish pounds in ten min before you head to the track.

Go visit Brent94Z's homepage.. there is a link when you click on his name..... on his page somewhere I believe he has a list of what certain commonly removed items weigh, so just go there, and add up what it is you want to remove.... seats, spare/jack, etc.

You could go to the extreme and swap the rear hatch with someone that has a Formula. I'm sure there's alot of people that would like to have the high profile rear spoiler of the Trans-Am. Personally...I would never do that no matter how much weight it saves! The rear deck spoiler is what sets the car apart from the other f-bodies...even though it may have some weight to it. BTW...does anyone know how much it weighs?
