Obviously I can't run the 50Wx4 headunits on the stock wiring to the individual speaker amps -- but what about running a line-level "preamp" signal out of a new head unit?
I'm assuming that's what the current head unit is doing. I'd like to keep the stock amps/speakers for my high/mids and add a small mono amp w/ a couple 10s in the back.

Yeah, that's all the stock bose unit does. I have an aftermarket head unit and had to buy a $50 adapter to tone down my head unit.

tried to do that once. It didn't give me the volume I was hoping for. Also the bose wiring is not as straight as that. I would just advise you to buy the converter. It fixed the braided wire issues and give enough adjustment to fine tune the system.

What'd you try once? A normal line-level converter?
