buffalo bill 05-15-2004, 02:40 PM i recently chnged oil in my car, but i was feelin a little cazy, so instead of buying the same old valvoline, i got quaker state. i know i broke my family tradition, but i alway wanted to try it.
so i was wonder what kind you guys buy? and i dont want to hear from you redline oil, or royal purple guys. i want to hear from people that dont want to pay over a couple bucks a quart of oil like me.
thanks
1fastformula 05-15-2004, 02:46 PM Mobil One flows in my vehicles.......Quaker has better stats than most conventional oils, but if you do not change it on time..........BUILD UP CITY!!!!!!
You need to try Synthetic oils once.......When you do, you will not look back at the DINO JUICE!!!!!!
Later
buffalo bill 05-15-2004, 02:49 PM really? i didnt know that. thanks man
but why is synthetic so good?
87DJP2001 05-15-2004, 03:26 PM Changing to a high priced synthetic in a high miles car is a waste of money. You are better off using a good grade of oil and changing it and the filter every 3/4 months.
PyRo9862 05-15-2004, 03:40 PM M1 :)
Ryanrabbie 05-15-2004, 05:45 PM I use Mobil 1 15W-50 in my built motor, why, its great, its synthetic which has better wear prevention and break down characteristics, also, if the manufacturers ship their flagship cars with Mobil one, thats good enough for me.
I know the Vette and Vipers, Porches and others ship with it in their crankcases. If the builders use it, I do too, and I use an AC Delco filter
Kwiksilverz28 05-15-2004, 09:51 PM I use Mobil 1 in all 4 of my cars. Period. Been using it for over a decade, and have never looked back. If I were to go dino, go Penzoil.
aklim 05-15-2004, 10:54 PM Mobil1 0W40 in the winter and 5W30 in the spring and fall and 10W30 in the summer.
Pneumatic_Tire 05-15-2004, 11:42 PM M1. It rules.
90rocz 05-15-2004, 11:51 PM Synthetic oil doesn't "break down" like conventional crude type oils, and usually doesn't contain the "paraphen wax" that causes build up in the lifter valley etc..
I usually use Pennzoil, a wax free oil, in either synthetic or conventional is better...I prefer full synthetic.
Chris`s85Z28 05-16-2004, 01:42 AM I use quaker state peak performance, for the dino oil nothings better, I pulled my 305 apart for a rebuild and there was almost no build up. Now that I rebuilt the 305 I`m gonna switch to mobil 1
I change my oil every 3000km or every 2 months
BigJustinZ28 05-18-2004, 10:57 PM I have and always will use castrol gtx 20w50 . Nothing the oil touches has ever broken or even made a noise in my 189k miles 84 camaro. Its in the 97 z28 too and my fiance's beater 84 t/a :)
krazzycowgirl 05-18-2004, 11:46 PM If you go to syth. then you have to watch for leaks. Syths are thiner oil & can leak really bad. If you are running a stock engine & no rebuild or reseal stay away until you do.
My car is going to go syths after I reseal her up hopefully this winter but right now we use Havoline 3 10w30

I don't understand how 5W30 Synth can be different in viscosity than 5W30 mineral. I have switched cars from regular to synthetic and never had a leak. I suspect that the synthetic oils clean out some of the sludge that keeps the oil in the pan.

Lt1 and Ls1 05-19-2004, 09:39 AM Mobil 1 Syntec
Patriot 05-19-2004, 12:35 PM Mobile 1 50/50 blend
90rocz 05-20-2004, 01:49 AM I don't understand how 5W30 Synth can be different in viscosity than 5W30 mineral. It is, it pours faster and doesn't "string" like conventional, more like water. That's why I always go up to 10w 30 synthetic, and I put new Havoline Synthetic in my wifes Park Ultra SC every 7500 miles, good filter every 2 months..
Pneumatic_Tire 05-20-2004, 02:14 AM Synthetic also doesn't seem to thicken up in cold weather. Shoot, I actually had 15-50 in my truck one winter, and the thing cranked right up, strong as in the winter, even in 2 degree weather. If you want a clean engine, and superb lubricating properties, spend the extra 2 bucks a quart for synthetic.
Like someone else mentioned. High end cars come with Mobil 1 from the factory. I wonder why?.......
buzz12586 05-20-2004, 07:50 AM I am running the Valvoline High Mileage oil in my car but that is because it has 86k on it and I don't see the point in wasting money on synthetic. Once I get my new motor put in I am going to switch to M1. My dad runs M1 in his 2002 Z28 though.

Thats low miliage around this place. The only two cars that dont have over 100k is my husbands z & the 00 GTP

I use mobil 1 sythetic with 115k and i have not a single leak, the motor has not been rebuilt or resealed. not only do i not have any leaks, but the engine bay and under car look brand new, maybe you just dont take car of your car?
5W30 btw
xeroxed 05-21-2004, 10:01 AM i use synthetic quaker state. havent had any problems using it.
Scoulter 05-21-2004, 10:09 AM Mobile 1, never had anything else in my 99 SS

Thank you but I have a 136k miles ( i have own this car for 3yrs & bought it with 119k) on my car & it still runs strong.
My car oil gets changed ever 2500 miles & a full tune up 3 times a year.
If you do a search you know that other people have stated the same fact. either on this site or on TGO.
Ville H. Valo 05-21-2004, 05:56 PM RAD:thumb: not all cars are the same, you are just making a generalization
92BLKL98 05-21-2004, 06:32 PM Synthetics flow better not because they are thinner than comparable weight oils, but because they have a uniform molecular structure rather than a random molecular pattern of dino oil. I've run synthetics, Mobil 1 for 100,000 miles then switched over to Amsoil and now have 220,000 miles on my L98 and it still runs very strong. with no smoking (except typical Chevy startup puff) and it burns no measurable amount between changes.
BTW I change oil at 6,000 miles and a filter and top off at 3,000 between changes
rotwiler 05-22-2004, 10:32 PM Always have used synthetics, currenty mobile1 0w40. Went to wallmart to buy some mobile 1, was about 28.00 a case of 6. Then went to the lube departmentment in store and they charged 27.99 for mobile 1 0w40 and they changed the oil, so was cheaper than buying it. I just bought a $2.00 supertech oil filter and they even gave me the 1/2 quart of mobile that was left over. Hopefully they didn't mess up and charge me less than they should have, because that was a excellent price.
PyRo9862 05-23-2004, 01:13 PM You spend $28 on oil, yet you buy a $2 filter?
I pay $19.95 for a 5qt container of M1 at walmart. It makes life that much easier, just one bottle to pour in, not give. I use NAPA brand filters, they are actually pretty good filters.
