Tough night at the track

well, it seem I forgot how to drive my car over the winter. Went to milan for the first time this year, wow. All my R/Ts were at or above 1 sec, 2 of my 60' s were ok at 2.3xx (street tires) third (and last) run 2.7. Yea, got some horrid traction that last one. Here's the rundown:

!st run:
2.31x 60'
16.7@ 80mph
pretty much pulled in, teched, took the crap out of my trunk and ran. This was a MAJOR let down, since its a full second and 6 mph off my last year's best, and I have a freer flowing exhaust now. I figured it was just bad driving and went around for a second run.

2nd run:
2.3(6?) 60'
17.0 @ 80 mph

Ok, so it heat soaked, but I had lined up better (over ran the lights, new waterbox placement messed me up:rolleyes: on the first run, unsettling me).

3rd run:
2.7xx 60'
17.2 @ 81.x mph

this is after I Iced the intake for a good 1/2 hour in the pits then staging lanes. I can only guess that the extra TQ just way overpowered the tires (couldn't hook at all). Even if you knock off 0.5 sec for the bad launch I'm still in the 16s at only 81 mph what gives?

A couple things come to mind here
A) the guy controlling the burnout box kept putting me into the water (Hello I'm running street tires:mad: ), whch i didn't realize till i had already started the burnout.
B) I think that my brakes are draging a bit they're slow to react to inputs, but 5mph and a full second?? I don't think so?
C) the motor is going out, it smokes on startup no matter how short its off.

Sorry about the long post, had to vent, I hate this car, any comments suggestions, spare LS1/t56s laying around to trade with my L98?

wow, something is deffiently wrong there. Better get things figured out under the hood. You should be running a lot better then that.

If your MPH is only 80 to 81 MPH, then you have a mechanical problem with your engine. 80 to 81 MPH translates to about 150 HP. Your TPI 350 should be good to about 90 - 93 MPH in stock trim. It sounds like you are missing a cylinder's worth of power, or more.

Better check your ignition, fuel, & replace the plugs. Maybe you have a non-functioning injector.

A bad injector would cause it to smoke upon startup.. Especially one that is stuck open allowing the cylinder to fill with fuel after the engine is shut off. Its a common problem with TPI engines and certain year injectors.

uuugghhh, I vowed I'd never take that stupid intake off again:mad:

Anyone got tools to get out rounded torx bolts? Though, if the intake is coming off anyway... could do some other stuff...vortec heads or HSR or t66 turbo or all of the above and stuff....

Smoke as in burn oil at startup? A guy at my school has an 89 IROC with only 30k miles on it and it burns oil every startup. He has a leaking intake manifold gasket... which he is re-doing and installing a stealth-ram or something like that.

Im just comparing here to see if this is a similar/same problem.

The smoke is usually raw fuel and/or valve seals depending on how old the engine is. Most SB Chevy's end up with bad valve seals in no time, even with low miles. But on TPI cars they're known for sticking/leaking injectors. Sometimes a good cleaning (with a kit that uses compressed air and solution) will make them last a little longer.
