I noticed that my transmission has 7 gearshift spots (P-R-N-OD-D-2-1), and other 4l60e's only have P-R-N-OD-D-2 ? I didn't know they had two versions?

 

yep I think the 3:23 gear cars had the 1 and and 2:73 gear cars didn't...

 

Yeah the performance axle with the 3.23:1 got the 1

the 3:23 have the 1 and the 2:73's dont, sort of
the 2:73 have a block off plate that can be cut off to allow you to shift into 1 if you want
a blockoff plate is all that is different

 

Just add to what the others have said, it is my understanding that this was done in order to meet noise restrictions. Travelling in first gear with a 2:73 rear will create more noise than is allowed by some law or another. In a 3:23 car, you can't get up enough speed/engine revs to meet that noise limit. Or something like this anyways.

Some have 1st some don't. Just good for doing doughnuts.

 

your car is a 1984Z of course it does! mabye somone changed the plate and cut the pin in your car, or mabye somone put in 2:73s because they wanted fuel economy. Or mabye they didnt do it in the early going...

My 99 has 1st gear..2.73's..everything on my car is stock..

 

i believe this goes back to the noise restrictions
1st gear in an LT1 was too much noise with 2:73's
i'm betting your LS1 makes less noise in 1st and falls within the acceptable noise restrictions

 

AFAIK, all LS1's with 2.73's have a selectable 1st gear (I know mine does) but all LT1's w/2.73's had 1st gear blocked out.

 

yeah what they said, my 97 has 3.23s and i can select first gear, friends 95 has 2.73s no first, my dad and my other friends LS1 z's both have 2.73s and you can select first.

 

Problem is now a days, Lt1s have been out since 93, so in that 11 year time period, its possible for the cars to have had a few owners. By that, its possible people have swapped consoles and so fourth. Unless you owned the car since it was brand new, which most of us havent, theres really no telling. On my 93 it does PRND321.

 

My car was orginally a 2.73 and did not have the selectable 1st gear. Pretty easy fix to break or remove the piece that locks out first though.
