Waaaay easier than I thought.
BEFORE buying the car, you must contact the manufacturer of the vehicle. They will have to verify the emissions and safety standards of the car. Call the 800 number, and GM of Canada will mail you the letters for about $60 CD. You may have to have the speedometer changed, get a reciept of having this performed. Once you have this paperwork, go buy the car. There are some cars that cannot be imported, however.
When you get to the border to come back in to Michigan, and tell them you are importing the car for personal use. You won't have to pay any duty or fees other than the $3.25 or whatever it costs to cross the border. You'll have to fill out one more form, they'll stamp it a few times, and then you can go to the secretary of state and get a michigan title for it.
