This tranny was just rebuilt about 3000 miles ago by one of my friends that works at a Pontiac Dealer "he did it in his spare time for $175.00 labor plus whatever parts cost". It has a 3000 Vigilante stall.

About 2 weeks ago the car wouldn't shift into 3rd at WOT unless I let off the gas about halfway. My new motor is drinking about 2 quarts of oil every 7-10 days because it was wayy to rich when it was first put in and has moly rings. Someone advised me to let it get to about 215 degrees and then run the crap out of it and the rings may seal or it's time to pull the motor back out. I'll probably be single if this happens since I've spent way too much on it already and everything has broken since the new motor has been put in.

I do as this person said and flogged it pretty good about 6 or 7 times and on the way back to the house the car was in 3rd gear and just revved up like it was in neutral. Changed the fluid and filter the next day. The tranny pan was very clean and the magnet had barely any metal on it. This made no difference. If you leave it in drive it will shift 1-2 just fine then when it tries to go into 3rd it's just like being in nuetral, if you rev it high enough it will catch 2nd or 1st gear again and if it catches 1st you have to manually shift it to get 2nd gear. I know barely anything about trannsmissions but this almost sounds like there is a leak in the valve body somewhere. I hooked up my laptop with Datamaster, no codes from the tranny and it was building pressure just fine.

Any of you tranny experts out there know where I might start to look for problems at. I have no problem with pulling the valve body off except for the fact that I've never done it before, but I'll certainly give it a try.

Sounds like the 3rd and 4th gear bands are shot? I know my dad's old truck with a 4L60 lost 3rd and 4th and it needed to be rebuilt?:( I don't think there's a simple "quick fix" for that problem unfortunately:rolleyes:.

Well, this will be the fifth time I've pulled out the tranny since the motor rebuild. I have a feeling it wont be the last.

EDIT: Where would I find a good rebuild kit for this 4L60E, I'm sure the one that it was recently rebuilt with was a cheap no name brand.

yea sounds like the 3-4 clutches are burned up, mine was like that, feels like your in nutral, i dont think it matters if you have the pressure if your fricition materia is all wore off the clutches, well good luck, think its time to pull it out again

I'm going to give www.pro-built.net a call today, been reading good things about the kits they offer. I already have all the aftermarket hard parts I just need the proper rebuild kit.

Is EVERYTHING I'll need to rebuild my transmission? Road Racing Kit (http://www.pro-built.net/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewproduct&productid=49)

Great question, i need to know this too!
My 2-3 shift at WOT problem turned out to be just being a bit short on trans fluid, but the fluid was a bit stinky, so I forsee a rebuild in the future, and I'd like to do it right (aka RR rebuilt kit, or is there something better out there?)

Most rebuilders don't really know what to do to a 4L60E for performance use. It's not just a matter of throwing a shift kit in! 4L60E's can be built to handle times into the mid 10's...IF built right.

Unfortunately, you're in Wichita, or I'd offer to build your correctly...LOL

To answer your question, it sounds like the 3-4 clutches are wasted. There are many things that I do to my racing 4L60E's to make the 2-4 band and 3-4 clutches live where most will fail.
