djc485 04-26-2004, 12:34 AM I was on my way home on Friday night and ran into a talon he took the same exit as me and we toyed around for a while until we got to a straight open road. He downshifted and I floored it We went to about 120mph before we shut down I barely edged him out (His nose was at my the back of my front fender). We pulled off to a gas station and bs'ed for a bit. I think he said he was running 17 psi and had a different turbo. I don't if he was telling the truth or not. DSM guys chime in and tell me if that is about right. By the by I have slp headers, random tech catback, orp, and programming.

andol469 04-26-2004, 10:55 PM Hard to tell based on the mods given, but very possible, especially if only on 17 psi- that hints at still having stock injectors, which means the car probably isn't tuned. Who knows, good kill either way :thumb:

Cwynn 04-27-2004, 08:40 AM Boost is set to 10-11lbs from the factory, factory pistons can handle 24-26lbs, the headgasket becomes a problem after 22lbs. With a triple layer metal headgasket and arp head studs, it's not a problem to run 24 pounds as long as you're not leaning out too much and everything else is good.
Boost != horsepower on a turbocharged car. Flow is very important, and when switching turbos, psi becomes irrelevant.

Once you swap turbos you flow more air at less of a pressure, so at 10psi on a larger turbo you may be flowing more air than 20psi on the stock 14b, I've had 3 dsms, they're pretty easy to make fast up to 11s, then after that breaking 10s is usually not even worth it.

Mikey 97Z M6 04-27-2004, 11:43 PM What year was the Talon? The first gens are quite a bit lighter (90-94) and have better turbo's from the factory. If he upgraded to a 16G turbo with some bolt-ons and 17psi, he would have no problems keeping up. My other car is a 92 Talon. ;)

How do you turn up the boost on a stock turbo, is the something tha tblocks or controls the air flow into the turbo?

There's more than one way to do it, the most common is the manual boost controller using a "T" fitting which has a ball and spring to keep air from going through it until there is enough pressure to move the ball back. After the air goes through the "T," it goes to the wastegate which opens and lets exhaust gas bypass the turbine wheel of the turbocharger so it doesn't continue to spool out of control.
