Is synthetic oil worth double the price?zachw1036 04-19-2004, 05:23 PM I am going to be driving my TA about 3-4 days a week in the summers and only getting on it on the street a little bit. is it worth the money to start putting synthetic in it? bombd84 04-19-2004, 05:29 PM You might as well. 17.99 for a 5-quart jug at wallmart of mobil 1 isnt that bad. Kataklysm 04-19-2004, 06:21 PM Yes it is worth it. It gives greater engine protection by reducing friction which reduces heat, heat = loss of power. CrippleFightin 04-19-2004, 10:16 PM Originally posted by bombd84 You might as well. 17.99 for a 5-quart jug at wallmart of mobil 1 isnt that bad. 17.99?! WHERE? The walmart by me charges 24.99! Capn Pete 04-19-2004, 10:24 PM If you feel you aren't going to be driving a lot of mileage and doing frequent oil changes, or as long as you don't mind spending twice the cost per oil change, then sure, it's maybe it's not a bad thing to run synthetic. However, I put a lot of miles on my car, and I'm not rich either, so I refuse to spend nearly $40 per oil change when I can spend around $15 per oil change:rolleyes:. I run Castrol GTX and have no problem doing it. I've seen many engines torn apart, even ones which ran Mobil 1, and they all look and smell the same inside...........dirty, worn, sludgy..........:yuck:. If you can afford synthetic oil though, then go for it I guess:cool:. Eliminator 04-20-2004, 09:13 AM I am lucky to put 600 miles a yr on my car last yr was 278 miles I work 6-7 days a week just a sunday driver. But I put Synthetic in just in case. ed's85irocz28 04-20-2004, 09:19 AM The oil is the most important part of your engine. Its what's gonna keep it alive and running hard. So get the best you can afford and down the road in a few years your engine will be thanking you, and you'll be happy you payed the couple extra bucks for the good stuff. Whatever you do, dont get the brand called Nooil. It sucks. CrippleFightin 04-20-2004, 09:42 AM Lube it up the right way!   iNF3RNo 04-20-2004, 11:14 AM Keep in mind synthetic doesn't need to be changed as often as the Flintstones stuff. It's designed to do so. LT-14me 04-20-2004, 11:22 AM Originally posted by iNF3RNo Keep in mind synthetic doesn't need to be changed as often as the Flintstones stuff. It's designed to do so. I got my mobile 1 synthetic for 14.95 at autozone..and thats for a case of 6 bottles. I would say its worth it, I Dont know where you guys shop but for me plus a filer it costs around 16 bucks per oil change:p dren70 04-20-2004, 01:27 PM Originally posted by LT-14me I got my mobile 1 synthetic for 14.95 at autozone..and thats for a case of 6 bottles. I would say its worth it, I Dont know where you guys shop but for me plus a filer it costs around 16 bucks per oil change:p 1495 would buy 3 quarts at my local autozone. and even the bosch prem filter is 6. the mobil 1 is 11. i use the valvoline durablend in my minivan and the full synthetic in the z28. honestly i believe its a waste of money to buy the synthetic IF YOU ARE A PERSON WHO CHANGES HIS OIL REGULARLY but i do it anyway. myabe its those commercials that made me do it. it definately isn't hurting anything. david z28chrizz 04-21-2004, 07:39 AM for 19.88 for 5 quarts at my walmart, there is no cheaper insurance that my car, which is autocrossed, road raced, and drag raced will be ready to play for many years to come. Dino is for the Jeeps... the camaro gets the good stuff... has from 300 miles on.... rpm4lalo 04-21-2004, 01:52 PM How many miles. Once I went past 100,000 on the odometer, I started to stay away from full synthetics. I use part syn, part dino, ALL Castrol. RS Dragster 04-21-2004, 05:28 PM I've recently switched to Mobil 1 and am going with everyone else that says you should be able to get AT LEAST 7,500 miles out of each change. I don't drive too harshly, plus the owners manual calls for longer intervals ;) chris miles 04-22-2004, 02:24 PM i have heard that the vettes came with and or are required to use synth oil...so if this is the case and i have a vette replacement motor from the factory do i have to use synth?? Compstall 04-22-2004, 04:01 PM PREFERRED not REQUIRED Capn Pete 04-22-2004, 04:39 PM Originally posted by chris miles i have heard that the vettes came with and or are required to use synth oil...so if this is the case and i have a vette replacement motor from the factory do i have to use synth?? Yes, I believe it's true that 'Vettes came factory with Mobil 1 (or some brand of synthetic) and it's rumoured that SS's and WS6's came with it as well, although I've never read any solid proof of that:think:. However, just because it came with it, you don't have to run synthetic.........you can switch to dino oil without any problems. WestCoast96Z28 04-22-2004, 06:15 PM Yes, have always used synthetic. If I had the money, I'd change the oil every month. If you're trying to save money, there's my "extended miles" oil if you don't want to change every 3000 miles. SixSpeedShifter 04-23-2004, 09:44 PM Is it recommended to stop synthetic after 100,000? I know synth is smaller molecules and therefore finds the cracks very easily, but doesn't it also keep the seals in better condition? Pandamonkey 04-23-2004, 11:39 PM I only change my oil once a year. At the beginning of the season of driving, usually around the end of May. I alway run Mobil 1 Syn. I only put on about 1000K a summer though.:( Make me wonder if it's worth even changing........ 1996 | Z28 SS 04-24-2004, 12:33 PM Yes.. SS Camaros (and I'd assume WS6's as well) came with synthetic oil. Or at least my 96 SS says in the "Z28 SS" handbook thing you get from SLP says it does. I use Mobil 1... it costs a little more but you change is less and it protects more. So I could never find a reason not too. pearlpurple 04-25-2004, 10:53 PM Synthetic oil has advantages with very cold start ups, a lot of stop and go driving, and for very hot climates where you're engine temperature runs hot for extended perods of time like in stop and go traffic. I do not plan to stop using synthetic and my engine is just past the century mark,, I am using the Mobil One higher Mileage 100% synthetic. Oh yeah don't use any oil additives regular oil changes is the very best thing for any engine. :thumb: :thumb: Xride 04-26-2004, 12:44 AM Originally posted by Capn Pete it's rumoured that SS's and WS6's came with it as well, although I've never read any solid proof of that:think:. no its true, says in the SS book thing, and says on the SS sicker, and says on the SS options paper. I put M1 in my car jsut cause its not that much more. Lt1t56 04-26-2004, 01:09 AM My thinking is "old school" I like to change oil every 3000 miles so I dont think synthetic is needed in my case. I have also been told that on high mile engines synthetic oil can leak past old seals a lot easier. | ||
