315's on 17 x 9's

I know a few people that are running 315/35's on 17 x 9's. They told me to go for it while others have told me not to. They run 285's on 17 x 9 1/2's and they say that's as far as they will go. Any opinions or experience on this subject?

While you may be able to cram it on, it will not be an optimal performer. If you want to do it just for looks it should be ok.

I run 315's on an 11 inch wheel.

I've seen 315 nitto's on stock salad shooters, looked a little weird but they hooked real nice.

I've heard that people have had blow outs when cornering when using a 315's on 9 inch wheels.

I thought 315's on 17x9's sounded like a bad idea, putting them on salad shooters sounds like an accident just waiting to happen.

I have 315 Nittos on my old SS wheels for track use. They do hook great, but they do bulge quite a bit, more then I would like. I would only put Nittos that wide on a 9 inch rim because they tend to be cut a little smaller then normal 315 tires.

Left side - 315/35-17 BFG Drag Radial on correct 17x11 wheel.

Right side - 275/40-17 GS-C on correct 17x9.5" wheel.

Think about what happens when you scrunch the tire on a wheel that is 2" smaller than is recommended by the manufacturer. If you think you are smarter than the engineer that designed the tire to fit on a specific rim width, go for it. :D

Roger Grotyohann (Grotyohann headers) ran a 315 on a 9.5" wheel but I sure wouldn't recommend it :)

I ran 275 and 285 series tires on 17x8 eagle wheels. I didn't have any promblems. But now got 17x9.5 all around.

Just curious... how do you know you didn't have any problems? Were you able to verify that the tire structure was not deteriorating more rapidly from the excessive heat generated by excessive flexing of the tread and sidewall? Did you do a side-by-side comparison with a set of the same tire on the correct width wheels to verify that tread life was not reduced?

I have question not about rim tire fitment but whether my 96 camaro would be able to fit a set of 315 width without rubbing the inner walls on turns as the tire flexs.... does anyone know?

I was thinking of getting 18 X 8.5 in the front and 18 X 9.5 in the back the wheels have a 32MM offset... Not sure if that helps anyone hehe doesn't really help me...

Salad shooters are 16" wheels , thats not possible;)

I ran 315 nitto's on my 17x9 WS6 wheels last year with no problems at all . The sidewall bulged out a little though aaaaaaaand "I've heard" 315 nittos are not a true 315 tire as far as width is concered , possibly why I had no issues . I cant verify either way . If I cared how my car handled or I was just putting normal radials on I wouldnt do the 315 on a 9 or 9.5" wheel .

I DO run an 11" rear wheel now and it spread the tires out quite a bit :)

Not trying to impress anyone. Just the facts.... but don't let "facts" get in your way. :)

Yeah... but... is that really a smart thing to do??? A 315 on a 9.5" rim is really pushing it but I'd think a 315 on an 8" rim could actually be considered dangerous.

Probably not. Which is why I haven't done it.

Is it me, or are Nittos drag radials much more narrow than most tires. I have 275s on my Formula and they look like a 255, I heard someone else comment on that. So if thats the case a 315 Nitto maybe not be so bad on a stock 9.5" Bullit wheel lol

The tires are narrower , which is why so many guys put the 315s on stock 9" f-body wheels . A 315 nitto on a 9" f-body wheel is hardly any wider than a 275 F1 radial .
