I was going to order a rebuild kit from Hanlon or D&D... what else should I replace while I'm in there? I'm thinking all the synchros, the steel 3-4 fork, but what else should I replace? Are there any bearings/seals etc. that wear out?
Is it a difficult job? I'm fairly good with cars, just never did a tranny before I'm sure it's simple but do I need special tools or knowledge??

I had Dayton 5.0 performance do mine and they had to wait on a special tool to take it apart so they could start working on it. Have you seen how many parts are in that thing??? I think I would let an experienced transmission expert do it, no offense.

Shoebox has the T56 service manual on his website.... it was enough to scare me off.

I wouldn't try it. Takes specialized tools and knowledge and I don't know of any "step-by-step" guide for beginners. Of course, everyone has to start somewhere if they want to learn. But the frequency of needing to rebuild a tranny seems pretty low, compared to say a motor. So I am not sure it's very high on the utility scale. I guess I am trying to answer your question by saying: I have never done it, but I suspect it's a hard skill to learn. Anything is "easy" once you know how though!
