3.73 install myself?

I just ordered some 3.73's, and my dad said that he could help me install them because he used to work on printing presses and installed these kind of gears all the time. My question is should I trust him, and install my gears with him, or have a shop put them in. Are there any special tools I would need to install the gears?

too many speciality tools you likely dont have around. .001" can mean the difference between a howling gearset and a quiet one.

1 more question, does the Ratech complete gear install kit come with the goop that shows the contact patch for the gears?

You need access to a press that can press off your pinion bearing and press it onto the new pinion. Chances are if you use the stock pinion shim on the new pinion, your pinion depth will be pretty close. If you want to measure that, you need a pinion depth checker. You also need a dial indicator to check backlash. I used the stock shim and didn't check pinion depth. I set backlash, checked the pattern, and it was fine.

If you're set on doing this yourself, do it the first time with someone (or with the advice of someone) who has done it before so you see what all the terminology is. It's not rocket science and if you're careful it will work out.
