I wanted to know if I could run 4:56 gears in my 94 camaro 6 speed. I currently have the stock 3:42. I running a lt4 hot cam with every bolt on performance part aval. Like a 58 throttle body, headers, etc. I know traction will be a major issue. But my traction is already bad now. I was thinking 4:11 gears but I want something to really throw me back. Is there something between a 4:11 and a 4:56. What will my engine rpms be in 6th with a 4:11 or a 4:56 or etc. I saw someone have a automatic ss with a 433 gear I think it was and it was a summer time car like mine. I have a 6 speed. Someone Please let me know - I need to make up my mind by monday when I take the beast to the shop for the gear - 4:11 - 4:56????

4:30's are right in between 11's and 56's.....either way i  to you for not fearing the gear:D

Dude i have 4:30's and it really jumps outta hole but your going to need slicks to get her to hook. At about 55-60 in 6th im only reving at about 2,000 with a 25" tire. Id go 4:30's. also you will be ripping through gears REAL quick.

Those gears will be horrible for your performance as you will spin and only be able to go about 100mph at 6000 rpms in 4th compared to 134 with the stock gears. At 6500 109 with 4.56 and 145 with 3.42. Plus you are going to break them easy as **** with a stock rearend!

i have 4.33s and love them. Wouldnt ever trade them. Not for the stock rear end though. 12 bolt or 9 inch is a must.

As for comparing top speed in a particular gear, thats pointless. All depends on your rpm capabilities and the tires you run. Im trapping at 115+ in 4th gear and have plenty of room to go faster without hitting 5th.

If I run slicks with a 4:33 or 4:56 it will break my 10 bolt correct - thats only if I run slicks. What about street tires or drag radials. Also is there any way I can just tighten up my 10 bolt to handle those gears or do I have to upgrade to a 9 or 12" ??? I mean is there some kind of part I can buy that can beef up mu stock 10 bolt. And has anybody here everyran 4:33 gears on there stock 10 bolt and had no problems. What will 60 mph rpms be at?? can I still use the highway once in a great while with 4:33 gears. - mike

Dude, do not put a gear that big in your 10 bolt! I had a buddy put 2 sets of 4.56's in his 10 bolt and I don't think either of them lasted long at all. Get some 4.10's. I am pretty sure 4.33's aren't even an option for a 10bolt.

im runnning 4.56s now, not in a camaro, but a nitroused t56 backed 4.3l v6 & i love them. I had 4.10s last year & i wish i woulda gone with the 4.56s to begin with

The more gear you put in the read end, the safer off it is. 2.73s are much harder to turn over than 4.56s. Its like dumping the clutch in 3rd gear instead of 1st, its harder on the clutch. Or trying to start off a bicycle in the highest gear.

Also, alot of people are getting 4.11s instead of 4.10s because 4.11s have fewer teeth. 3.42s and 4.56s both have 41 teeth on the ring gaer but the 4.56s have 9 on the pinion instead of 10 like the 3.42. The fewer the teeth, the thicker they get. They don't make 4.33s for the stock 10-bolt, atleast that I know of but you can go with 4.56s if you aren't afraid of gear, just get used to not having any traction unless you drive around on drag radials.

actually a steep gear will provide better traction than higher gears. The steeper gears knock the breath out of the motor, which kinda keeps the wheels from turning over. Plus a higher gear once it gets started its gonna wind longer than the steeper gear. i think that info is right.

I have a 6 speed. I have the hot cam and plan to use nitrous in the future. I want the biggest gear that I can put in my car thats not going to break my 10 bolt. Can I use 430 gears with drag radials. Slicks might cause the rearend to break but drag radials should be okay right?? - or should I just stick with 411 gears

As atljar suggested in his post, to have a sensible discussion about this the poster needs to state how high his motor revs, what size and type of tire he is using, and what he is trying to accomplish. For optimum 1/4m times, the equation is fairly simple. You want to be just past peak hp through the traps in 4th. So if you have an idea of your mph and know your tire diameter, it's simple to figure out the optimum gear. That does, of course, leave out the issue of whether you can make it hook. And we all know that if you hook hard with a 10-bolt, it's only a matter of time.

So, what is your goal?
