Do I have an amp?

I really don't know.

It's a 97 firebird. Looking in the user's manual, I ought to have 10 speakers and a 500 watt amp, as I've got the casette player with an equalizer. However, an idiot (hopefully something I'm not, but I won't assume anything) should be able to tell that there are 4 speakers in the car. I believe I've read that the amp would be by the spare tire in the f-bodys with the monsoon system on the 98's and up.

Really confused, any help is appreciated.

Pretty sure it is in the same location in the TA as in the SS. If this is so then you need to look in the spare tire well. Remove the spare and you should see a black piece of metal that looks like a bracket or piece of support sheet metal. This is what you are looking for!!! Good luck.

Well, I found nothing in the spare tire section, so I can safely assume I have no amp (hopefully). I wonder if I can stick one down there... there's probably a better spot though.

Alright, I think I've about wrapped up this subwoofer deal. I've got my stealthbox (http://www.subthump.com/acamarostealth.htm), my sub (http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?icatid=368&stk_code=sonxsl101p5&svbname=30), and my amp (http://www.ikesound.com/product-product_id/1181). I know I'll need wires and such, but this is the main stuff. Luckily, I managed to spend less than 300 dollars. The most expensive thing is the stealthbox. How's it looking so far?

To be honest with you, I wouldnt bother with that Sony Sub... a guy I know has two of those (dont know what amp), but in all honesty they sound like crap... and distort very easy. I think it would be worth your money to spend a little more and get a lower-end rockford or jl audio (or whatever else). It could very well be what amp he's running or how he wired it, so take what Im saying with a grain of salt. Just my .02

<sigh> That's what I've heard about it too. Oh well. This Pioneer (http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/PIOTSW255C?ref=prgr) any good?

I've also found this Audiobahn (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-cS7qUkDWiMU/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?s=0&c=10&g=67600&I=037AWC10T&o=m&a=0&cc=01&avf=N) that I can get for about 50 bucks elsewhere. The biggest thing stopping me here is that this can be wired at 2 ohms for 400 watts. However, when the amp is wired for 2 ohms, it produces 420 watts. Is it possible to tweak it down a bit?

I would definetely take a chance with that pioneer before Id buy a sony. I got vouch for audiobahns too... I have one that has tons of hours on it ( about 2 years of being turned up everyday ) that is retired to my bedroom right now and it makes for an EXCELLENT home theater sub. Its an old 500watt 12" I believe.

Are you saying your amp would make 20 watts over what that subs max wattage is?

Nah, I was trying to say -- I'm not good at this yet -- that the amp produces 20 more watts than the subs can take. I was wondering if the amp could be powerd down a bit to fit perfectly with the subs. If that's the case, I'll be taking the audiobahn. What does 400 watts sound like out of one sub, btw?

ive got a audiobahn sub with a 800 watt amp wired to a 8ohm sub so im only pushing 400 watts. the california amp is really not a well made amp. the distortion is really high, and being that distortion is what blow subs, i wouldn't waste my time. anyway, i believe that 400 watts is more than enough to tickle my nose. the sony and pioneer are out performed by the audiobahn. gl

Point taken.

How about this Kenwood (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-rWpu0v0hZxV/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?a=1&s=0&cc=01&g=130&id=essential_info&i=113KAC8151)? I can get it for about 135 due to a sale where I live.

i heard there's an amp behind the stock head unit that powers the speakers; i don't know if there's a separate amp for the sub :o
