birdmanz28 04-03-2004, 10:49 PM I currently have an offroad y pipe on my z28, but in NC they are cracking down on emissions testing for inspections. I was wondering if anyone had tried different setups to get pass the emissions tests and still have a basically functional offroad set up.
My understanding is that as long as u have 02 sims (your computer read that you have no errors) and they can see catylitic converters under your car then you will pass. This brings me to another question ANYONE TRIED GUTTING A CAT AND PUTTING IT ON THEIR CAR AND STILL PASSING INSPECTIONS WITH 02 SIMS?
Super Slow '97 04-03-2004, 11:01 PM My car has gutted cats and it passes in GA. I have heard of some people just taking the heat sheild off of a cat and tack welding it in place for a visual inspection, Again I have heard this... sounds like it might work.
birdmanz28 04-03-2004, 11:45 PM did you need 02 sims to pass?
Super Slow '97 04-04-2004, 12:05 AM Yes I have the O2 sims programmed into the computer. N problems drove they scanned it and i was gone.
Loony 04-04-2004, 12:18 AM What I had done a while back was get the O2 simms and then I gutted the cats and stuck a straight through pipe through the middle of the cat. That way you don't get that echo or whatever because of that open chamber...thing....I passed.
Super Slow '97 04-04-2004, 12:21 AM Good idea on the straigh through pipe mine has the echo wish I would have thought of that.
gav'spurplez 04-05-2004, 02:17 AM Is there a way to get your car exempt from emissions. I live in chicago IL and have heard that if your car is under a certain mileage a year or if it is a recreational vehicle you do not have to get it tested. how can someone with a 60s-70s built up muscle car take an emissions test ??
rncotton 04-05-2004, 09:39 AM Yup .... what they said already.
If your car has to pass a visual inspection and they check for cats, gut a set of stockers and weld a pipe inside. I ran gutted cats and hated the sound of the extra "resonance chambers".
Since I didn't get any real gain at the track, I just stuck my stock cats back on and sold the gutted cats along with my O2 sims.
birdmanz28 04-05-2004, 09:40 PM Thanx.. that helped alot.. since I already have a 3" offroad y pipe.. I think I might jus get some gutted cats and weld them on over top of the y pipe for the look. It would be the same concept as putting a pipe through the cats... tell me what you think?

In ontario, if you fail the test, and then it is more than X number of dollars to make it pass, you get expempt. And im not too sure how chicago works but here if its older than 20 years or newer than 3 it doesnt need to be tested.
00LukeyWS6 04-06-2004, 12:43 AM So who thinks that in IL an LS1 with gutted cats and O2 simms will pass? All rest stock?

In IL they have an OBDII emissions test. They hook up a scanner to your computer and if you are not throwong any codes....you pass! So put LTs and a cam in your car have it tuned and as long as the computer says your good, then your good.

Like someone said above, if the car is 20-25 years old, you don't need to get tested for emissions (I forget if it's 20 or 25 years, here)
Also, you only have to pass what the requirements were, for THAT YEAR. As in, a car made in 1990, doesn't have to meat guidelines for cars made in 2000.
b-stevens 04-07-2004, 06:52 PM In IL you can get a temporary if you spend over 450 dollars on repairs, but I would suspect that its only temporary.
Pre-69 cars are exempt.

FiefSS 04-07-2004, 10:45 PM illinois i believe as stared b4 pre 69 cars are exempt which is lame cause mine is a 69.. how the heck its gonna pass any emmision test is beyond me :) if u get antique plates its exempt though but technically u arent supposed to cruise around in it unless go to get gas, get it worked on, or goin to a show.
Camaro_Guru16NY 04-08-2004, 11:10 AM THe majority of places will let you buy with just a visual inspection with no problems but there suppose to be changing that in the near future and doing a full pcm scan on all OBD 2 cars for emmisons compliance but im not sure exactly when.

Steve0 04-08-2004, 11:41 AM My car passed the sniffer here in NC with a gutted cat. :)
95_LT1_6SPD 04-08-2004, 04:23 PM i should ( crosses fingers ) be passing here in onatiro with Lts, and a cat. The funny thing is, the newb at the licence bureau doesnt even ask for emissions when buying a sticker :p
birdmanz28 04-14-2004, 02:21 PM Stevo tell me what kind of setup did you have..
I live in NC
