Brent94Z 04-03-2004, 05:16 PM Hey guys, with the pics and comparison talks of the Hooker Long Tubes vs the Pace Setter Long Tubes, I thought you might get some use out of some pics :D
In these pics, the Hookers have the collector flange. The Pace Setters are slip fit.

First pic is the Pace Setter. Second is the Hooker. Pace Setter gives a larger dimple than Hooker does so there is room for a wrench. This cuts down a little on flow but makes install much easier.

Well, there you go. Some side by side comparison shots for those looking to buy a set of long tubes and thinking about either of these.
The coating on the Hookers is done by Paul Barry. That coating is proven and I know works and stays looking good. Paul does an excellent job. The coating on the Pace Setters look good but I have no data on those as to how long it lasts, does it discolor, etc.
Also, there is a decent weight difference. The Hooker long tubes weigh in at 24 lbs. The Pace Setters are 30 lbs. Not all of that can be in the heavier duty flanges and also some of the Pace Setter tubes are considerably shorter than the counterpart Hookers. Sooo, Pace Setter must be using some better/thicker metal for their tubing as well since they are so much heavier and there is less "footage" of tubing.
madwolf 04-03-2004, 05:39 PM As always, good job Brent! :thumb:

Thanks, madwolf! :D
I've been seeing a lot of questions about these Pace Setters lately and since I had a set in my garage, I thought these comparison pics might be useful for somebody :)
94droptopz 04-03-2004, 07:34 PM the real question Brent is which set do you want to sell??:D
stereomandan 04-03-2004, 07:36 PM Great job Brent!!
Those Pacesetters look great!!!
Right on par with the Hookers, or better. The only negative is the slip fit collector, but that can be fixed easily, and the weight.

:D The Pace Setters are for a friend of mine. The Hookers are an extra set I have... might stick them on the convertible? Not sure though so who knows, I might end up selling them later down the road :)
Man, I wish they would have put that much thought into the shorties. Cuz mine were done with some real crappy quality. Cant get bolts in or out to save your life, and the welds look like a 2 year old did them.
blown383 09-20-2004, 09:32 PM Well I wonder what the difference is between those 2 and the Jet Hot long tubes? What about price differences?

teke184 09-20-2004, 10:10 PM MY GOD!
how on earth do you get to those bolts and plugs!!!
i'm glad i have an LS1....i can check torque on all bolts with one wrench, and do all the plugs in 30min!!
JB'z 94 09-20-2004, 10:44 PM Thanks for the comparison, I purchased the PS's Friday ;)..
slayer6x6 09-20-2004, 10:50 PM I just installed the pacesetter mids on my car over the weekend. Those dimples for the header bolts would have made the job 10x easier! Among other things.....
brandboZ28 09-20-2004, 11:23 PM Thanks Brent. Awesome comparison! I think Im gonna give the Pacesetters a try. Cant beat the price, especially with the gp going on and all. :D
ShawnMacAnanny 09-20-2004, 11:32 PM I was gonna get the Pace Setters from ebay but was afraid they weren't very good quality but DAMN they look nice. Great job with the pics, thanks.
SoloExceptional 09-21-2004, 02:38 AM I bought some of the pacesetter LT's I didn't get the Chrome Coating, but I know that black coating burned off in about 2 days of driving
Firehawk_Dude 09-21-2004, 02:50 AM OFF TOPIC: But the black paint is only shipping paint so they don't get scratched, its supposed to burn off fast.
Great pics by the way. Keep up the good work :)
SoloExceptional 09-22-2004, 01:28 AM Oh... shows what I know :D lol

If he would of pics of Jet-Hot's it would of blown them both away. The jet-hots pretty much are more hevy duty, and have more quality in them. Picture the hookers except with....... Better coating, bigger flanges, thicker and cleaner welds, and the collecter seems to be formed and weld better.
Nice comparison. I did not like the way the inside of the collector looked like on those pacesetters. This may show a loss in power over the hooker or jethots, if ever tested. Collectors play a huge role in scavanging and can show better gains in other header applications, where you can select your own.
Just my .02
blown383 09-22-2004, 03:08 AM I have a set of Jet Hots so Im wondering. :)

Critter 01-16-2007, 10:29 AM sticky in the exhaust section? you know this is always a hott topic and it would save people a lot of time!
Brent94Z 01-16-2007, 10:32 AM sticky in the exhaust section? you know this is always a hott topic and it would save people a lot of time!
I'll move it there... when the post was first made there was no exhaust section :D
The mods in the exhaust section will decide if they want to make it a sticky or not :)
seawolf06 01-16-2007, 10:36 AM But do the thicker flanges definitely mean less leakage?
Critter 01-16-2007, 10:36 AM  its got my vote, good job on the pics. glad i got the pacestters
Brent94Z 01-16-2007, 10:39 AM But do the thicker flanges definitely mean less leakage?
No idea. I would think the machining and the "bead" around the exhaust port would be a larger factor in leakage than the thickness of the flange. A properly built 12" flange will leak less than a crapily (word? ) built 1/8" flange :D
seawolf06 01-16-2007, 10:58 AM That's what I thought, Brent. So why the big deal about the thickness of the flanges? Wouldn't lighter be better if the end product is the same?
Brent94Z 01-16-2007, 11:20 AM That's what I thought, Brent. So why the big deal about the thickness of the flanges? Wouldn't lighter be better if the end product is the same?
My opinion... it could go both ways. A thinner flange means more of a chance for it not being true and flat. However, being thinner means it is easier to "pull it in" with the bolts and make it tight. A thicker flange that isn't true will be more difficult to pull in and make tight. So, a thicker flange could be better or worse. Again, I think it depends more on how true the flange is and the sealing weld bead being "good" than it does on the thickness.
CamaroRacing12 01-16-2007, 11:35 AM so brent if u didnt have either of these headers, and u saw this post....which ones would u buy?..... i am all for the pacesetters except for the pics of the collectors kinda make me second guess my decision....also how hard is it to bolt a 3" exhaust to those slip fit collectors????

Right now I actually don't have a strong opinion as to which one is better than the other mainly because I have no dyno numbers to accurately compare the performance difference. Right now if I had to buy one set or the other I'd probably buy the one I could get the best deal on :)
As for the slip fit... that's not really an issue IMO. I've seen no problems with them on my bud's car. Here are some pics...

So all he did was attach them with those clamps?.... 3" collector to 3" piping with just those clamps holding them together with no problems? sounds great...sounds like what im gonnna do...
btw i havent got the vinyls i got form u on the car yet.....im waiting for the spring...but once i do i will def send some pics ur way....

No... it is an actual slip fit. They overlay by an inch or two and then the clamp goes over this area. When you use an impact gun to tighten the bolts these seal up very good :)

ooo so the collectors a lil larger then 3"....so the piping can slip right in...then u clamp it down....sorry its just hard getting a visual of it.
Projectz28 01-16-2007, 04:22 PM ooo so the collectors a lil larger then 3"....so the piping can slip right in...then u clamp it down....sorry its just hard getting a visual of it.
other way around. The pipe is slightly larger than the collector to go over the collector and clamp down.
CamaroRacing12 01-16-2007, 04:45 PM other way around. The pipe is slightly larger than the collector to go over the collector and clamp down.
so the collectors rn't exactly 3"?
Projectz28 01-16-2007, 05:15 PM the collector is 3", but the pipe that goes over it is slightly larger. Its done with a pipe expander so one pipe can be slipped over the other.
Jared 3870 01-16-2007, 07:08 PM The collector in the pacesetters would be 3" OD (outer diameter, measured from outside edge of pipe) and a universal X-pipe will have a 3" ID (inner diameter, measured from inside edges of pipe), allowing them to slip together.
Projectz28 01-16-2007, 07:10 PM The collector in the pacesetters would be 3" OD (outer diameter, measured from outside edge of pipe) and a universal X-pipe will have a 3" ID (inner diameter, measured from inside edges of pipe), allowing them to slip together.
much better explanation than mine;)

i hope ur right! if not i will bring my duals to my friend who will widen then on that machine he has at his shop...
