It says here that only the "ready to run" distributors can be used without the ignition system that msd makes with it, but they don't seem to have a "ready to run" for the pontiac..........There has to be some MSD distributor that will just take the place of my stock one, right? Is there another model? If not, what other brands are you guys running? The MSD was $250 for my car, and I saw a Pertronix Flamethrower for about $230........and it should just drop right in.........Would that be a good choice? I was looking into that brand....

Anyone have opinions on this brand? Thanks for the input!

MSD is without a doubt the best system out there for your Poncho. And no, there is no MSD dist that will work without the box.
If you really must have a self contained system, take a look at a mid-70's Pontiac HEI. They work pretty well for street cars.

Pertronix and Mallory both make conversion kits to replace your points and condeser, assuming your housing, shaft and bearings are ok.. they run around $100
Your stock rotor and cap can be used, making tune ups cheaper and easier too... and you can always add an MSD box to it later on if you want.

For your mods, I'd go with a D.U.I. distributor just to make it easy...

I personally have a Poncho HEI with an MSD Dust Cap conversion, 6-AL box and Adjustable Timing control on my 70 T/A....

It works fine, but now that I think about it, it's all just overkill....

More parts just mean it's more prone to failure...

I've already had to replace the 6AL cause it crapped out on me (luckily it was under warranty), so now I have an old 6A under the new 6AL in case it craps out again....

If I had it to do all over again, I'd either go with a D.U.I. or just a stock HEI with a Dyna Module, new performance weights/springs and a quality coil...

More than good enough for the street IMHO:cool:

What is the "DUI" system? At this point, I did see the GM HEI kit that MSD makes, and I wanted to get it with the 6A ignition, and get the MSD distrubutor too. Basically, after having 2 stock distributors crap out on me, 1 WHILE TRYING TO GET THE MOTOR TO TURN OVER FOR THE 1ST TIME (I HAD TO GO TO THE PARTS STORE IN THE MIDDLE OF RUNNING THE NEW MOTOR B/C OF A POS DISTRIBUTOR)............I want more reliability and a hotter spark basically....I did see that pertronix distributor (or other brand I forget) for $130, maybe I can get that and a good coil to go with it........I am still considering MSD kit though, tell me what that "D.U.I." kit is though. Thanks!

The D.U.I. (Davis Unified Ignition) is basically a modified HEI Distributor....

Click Here (http://www.performancedistributors.com) for more info...

It's a simple 2-wire hook-up, so the install is very clean (no loose wires or external coils) and they have complete units for just about any engine (including Ford)

Thanks for the link, looks good. $300 though? But that comes with the coil and module, and it says it's made to fit my needs. Sounds cool to me! Thanks!

I know Jim Davis personally, and have used his distributors in several applications. You will be VERY happy with his product, and in the slim chance that you aren't happy, call him, and he will do whatever it takes. They set up a distributor for your exact setup, and fully curve it on a distributor machine before it leaves the shop, when you get it, it is a drop in unit, that you will never have to worry about. It might be a little more money, but IMO it is definately worth it.

In three days of surfing trying to get as much info on HEI conversion for my newly acquired Buick that site had not only all the answers but the products, too.

You mean you just installed the MSD HEI coil?

Depending on your mods, I'd suggest just having the distrbutor recurved, install new springs and weights and a new MSD HEI Module...

That's pretty much all that's needed for most modified applications...

If you've got serious mods and/or spraying juice, then you might consider getting a box...

The two basic boxes are the 6A and 6AL (which is basically a 6A with an adjustable Rev Limiter)

If you're running a high compression motor (as I am) and have to constantly adjust timing to compensate for Octane rating, you might also wanna consider MSD's adjustable timing control:)

Lets you adjust timing up to 15* by just turning a knob:cool:

I still say a DUI is more than adequate for most applications though.....

Mallory Unilites are just as good as the MSD system. Just another option.
