I have a Flashing SES that my "generic" version of ATAP for palm doesn't detect!?? It shows no DTC's? I've been told that the flashing SES is usually a multiple misfire or a catylitic/emmisions failure. Anybody have a "enhanced" version of ATAP or some scanner that will read/monitor misfires or just tell me what is going on? I'll gladly come to where you are and pay you $20 to hook me up. The wierd thing is that the car car idles/drive great! The SES light flashes when cruising 2000-3000 rpm. Goes off when I come to a stop or slow to under 2000 rpm. If I accelerate through the gears and keep the revs over 3000 rpm it never comes on!!?? If anyone can lend a hand or give some advise I'd be very grateful. Thanks, -Greg

Its multipul missfires.. And BAD at that.

Ive only seen it when crap was damaged bad in the motor or when a plug wire wasnt put on.

Well, this is the part of the story that I didn't post (I may still be in denial LOL): I didn't miss a shift, but I did break a valve spring end of last season cruising around 2000 rpm on the freeway. It's been siting since November. I thought I got lucky 'cause it broke at the top right near the retainer, maybe I wasn't as lucky as I thought. If a valve kissed a piston and bent wouldn't it run rough, backfire and crap? Does anyone have a leakdown tester I could borrow too?

No it could run absolutely fine, with a slight stumble...

You need to do a compression and leak down test..

It might be something as simple as ignition probs.. ie plugs or wires.. etc

It can come on even if the car is running fine, just means too much unburnt fuel is getting to the cat.

If you throw it on a scanner, it should tell you what cylinder it is.
I dont know if the scanner you used will tell you, but the ones they use at autozone will say what cylinder it is.

Well, if that's the only thing a flashing SES can mean, sounds like my valve probably did get bent then, in which case I think I know what cylinder is misfiring. Very, very :(

Hey Greg, Let me know if you still want to scan it. I have a Tech2 and a full version of Autotap available to me that we can use. Sorry to here about your problems.

Hey Jon!
I can't believe you haven't sold your Hawk yet!!
I think my misfire is probably on cylinder 6, but if you have any time this weekend that I could swing by that'd be great.

I had a similar problem, and it ended up being a bad coil. I'd put the stock plug wires back on to rule that out. Then do a scan to setect a misfire. there should be a code in there if it is flashing.

One easy way to detech a bad coil is to switch one side of the engine with a friend, it will show up immediately if that was it.

Dont rule out a bad plug. Switch those out also.

hey, I have my tech 2 home from work this weekend. feel free to stop by and we can see what cyl. its on, then sw. the coils, then wires, then plugs to find out if any of those are the problem. Im guessing coil myself. as far as the valve goes, I dont think thats gonna be it. due to it running good at idle. also could be an inj. getting dirty. Ive seen that alot w/part throttle misfires. I dont have my cleaning tool here, but I can bring it home one day this week to clear them out for ya. call my cell if you havent scanned it yet w/jon and want to stop by.

whats the chances you just got gas before this happened? i had the same problem with my 98, checked everything, but ended up being water in gas, drove it for a little while untill it was down on gas, then filled it up with some good gas and some dry gas..

just an idea, good luck

later,
Greg

WOO F*@#$%&* HOO!!!!! Chris, you are the man! Thank you, Thank you. Went out to Chris' today hooked up the scanner and showed #4 wasn't firing!? l expected the worse. Chris still thought is was a ignition problem...swapped coilpacks and found one of the pins on the coilpack plug was bent. Straightend the pin, pluged it in, started it up and...NO SES LIGHT!!! Now, I hadn't driven it all winter so I thought it was running fine...when it was actually running on 7 cylinders  Well it's running fine now! :D I am sooo frickn' happy! I can hardly type right now! Chris, if you ever need an extra set of hands for wrenching or a parts gopher I'm your man! I owe ya one. Thanks again bro!
