Hello.

I need help to pick a new cam for my 305 TPI. The cam has to be a good "streetcam" for my dayli driven Camaro.
(don't wan't to loose low-end power).

I have no idea what cam to choose, but I have got 4 different suggestion from other:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.
Crane Powermax 2032 (#104224) --> 214 / 220, .452 / .465 112 LSA
Crane Rockers (#10758-16), Ratio 1.6

2.
Comp CS XR264HR-12 (#08-501-8) --> 212 / 218, .488 / .495 112 LSA
Crane Rockers (#10758-16), Ratio 1.6

3.
Lunati (#54778LUN) --> 206 / 215, .469 / .489 112 LSA
Rockers ?

4.
Erson (#E119811) --> 214 / 214, .480 / .480 110 LSA
Rockers ?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-What would be the best choise for my car?
-What is the main difference between those four cams?
-Shall I go for 1.5 or 1.6 rockers? Anything else?

Or, will you just propose an another cam?

I will get a new prom/chip to match the new cam set-up.

My car:
1987 Camaro IROC-Z, T-tops, Loaded.
305 TPI - TH700R4 (std. stallconv.) - Borg-Warner 9" Posi 3:27 (from a -88 GTA)

World Products SB-Chevy S/R Torquer 305 Heads (port-/gasketmatched),
Hooker Super Competition Headers (Ceramic Coated by Jet-Hot),
Flowmaster American Thunder 3" Cat-back., Cat.removed,
Fully ported + +plen./run./mani., Ram-Air-Induction, T.B. Airfoil,
Holly adj. fuelpressure reg., T.B. Coolant Bypass,
180*F Thermostat, Hypertech FanSwitch (200*-185*),
Custom Chip ( CCS "Tweak" ACXT180). Accel coil, cap. wire etc.

THANKS for any help!
Br Morten

I will not go for a 350 but stay with my 305...

Dan used a Comp Cams XE262H, which is a 214/224 duration @ .050", .462/.470" lift cam.

Combined with home-ported heads, edelbrock headers, edelbrock intake, and some other mods, he went something like 14.0 @ 100 mph. Read his page for some good ideas.

The Crane 2032 is as much cam as your engine can adequately manage. You'll feel a little loss in the low end grunt but it is the best of that particular lot for your situation. If you could find a cam that is basically one step milder than the 2032, I think you would like it better, both on the low end and in your mileage per gallon. Top end will hardly be worth mentioning, and you spend 99% of your time in the lower end rpms anyway. I'd stay away from 1.6 RRs, they will just kill more of your low end. And your 87 uses a roller cam, so I don't know if these are all roller cams, either. That makes a big difference. If in serious doubt, Crane or Comp or Lunati or whoever can nail the choice for you, just call their 1-800 number and they'll help.

Dan's TransAm has 3.73 rear gears and a higher stall tc, so that lets him be a bit more outrageous with cam choice. I believe he has recently gone up to the XE268, having lost a lobe on the 262. This is a flat tappet cam, too, whereas the 87's is a roller.

Is the lift on the first cam listed with the 1.6 rockers figured in or not? I like it duration wise, but I would want the lift up closer to where the 2nd cam is listed at, if the .452/.465 lift is with 1.5s with 1.6s it will be about perfect, up around .480/.495 or so.

I would not go any milder personally for a 305 with heads/intake upgrades. I run a 204/214 duration cam in my stock heads/unported base 305 TPI and it could stand to be larger IMO, any smaller than that 212/220 and you're leaving some power on the table for your setup IMO... (I run 3.42s out back BTW, I think you'll be fine with the 3.27s)

Thanks for all reply.

The four cams listed in my post are suggestions from Comp, Crane, Lunati and Mr.Gasket.
I'm not sure if the numbers are with 1.5 or 1.6 rockers but I think it is with 1.5.

Still not sure what cam (and rockers) to choose but thanks for your advice.

while you guys on on this topic i was kinda wondering the same thing. but wondered if anyone ever considered this setup for a 86 or earlier tpi.
http://store.summitracing.com/productdetail.asp?p=1827

it looks like it would be a idea for me due to the fact that i have a 86 z28.
also i have never put a cam in a car and was wondering on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the hardest) how hard it would be to install this setup. i would most likely have my grandpa help me, he's pretty good when it comes to tearing a motor apart and working on it.

Thanks, Chris

P.s Sorry i cant help you with you question 87 blue iroc

It is a long process, a good 8 hours if you really know what you're doing. It is the sort of thing where you would want to change the heads too, if you had a set ready. It is not really hard, just time consuming and tedious. You are bent over almost all the time, so grandpa won't be too happy to help.

They don't give any specs on that Summit cam, so it is hard to give you any advice on it other than the 40 hp they claim would be nice to have.

That Summit cam is also in the catalog, it specs out right around 204/214 dur @.050, with lift of around .420/.442. It's nearly identical to the cam I'm using in my 86 IROC's 305 TPI. It's a good cam for a fairly stock car where you're not planning on upgrading the heads, etc. It is a vast improvement over the stock peanut cam in the 86s. I put it in while I still had the stock exhaust manifolds with just free mods and a catback and was still a good choice. Obviously it benefitted alot from the headers and such but it will still work well if you're fairly stock. It's just a slight step above the hotter factory 5spd cams, so it's a good choice IMO.

That cam was my first cam swap, I just did it over a spring break, took like 3 days. I could do it in one day now, just takes a bit of trying and learning the first time.

Hello, need more help.

Crane Powermax 2032 (#104224), 214 / 220, 112 LSA,
.452 / .465 (with 1.5 rockers).
.482 / .496 (with 1.6 rockers).
Comp CS XR264HR-12 (#08-501-8), 212 / 218, 112 LSA,
.488 / .495 (with 1.5 rockers).

If I use Crane (#104224) and 1.6 rockers I got about the same lift as Comp (#08-501-8).
Can you try to tell me what will be the main different engine characters with these two cams with "same" lift?
If I decide to stay with my stock untouched 305 heads (NOT the S/R Torquer Heads),
what about cam then?
Crane (#104224) and 1.5 rockers? Or some compleatly different cam?

Have you checked out the ZZ4 cam? It has about the same duration as the last few cams, and lift is some .490/.510. with 112 lsa. I went with that cam and a set of ported 305 081 heads.

Hello.

I ended up with this cam setup:
Crane PowerMax 2032 (214/220-112), Comp Pro Mag. 1.52 r.r. and new chip.
+ new valve seals and timing chain.(Still use my stock heads, no s/r torquer...)

So far I'm very happy with my new set up! More power = more fun :)
May I dont remeber the old cam, but I cant say I miss any low end power.

BUT i'm not so happy with my Flowmaster American Thunder 3" cat-back,
it sounds like a boat... I dont like the deep tone blam, blam, blam, blam. :(
I would like something more "crispy".
I dont need the loudest one but I need the best sounding one....
There are many of you out there talking good about Hooker AeroCh cat-back.
Is Hooker cat-back the way to go?

Thanks for all replys so far,
and thanks for any tip about a new cat-back.

You should be able to score a stock LT1 cam for $10 or $20

Wow, this is a year old! Great to see you took my advice and stayed a little conservative with your cam choice. Using a very similar grind I can tell you that it works very well for my 305, too. No noticeable loss of low end grunt but plenty of extra hp above the 3000 rpm mark :)

I know a guy with an 85 TPI 305 Iroc and he uses the Hooker Aero chamber system. That thing is WICKED sounding (not to mention LOUD) yet he says its not noisey in the interior when cruising around. If you don't want to get your neighbours on your case I'd stay away from 95% of what's on the market, Hooker included.

Personally, I prefer a quieter muffler like the Walker Quiet Flow but I'm 47 years old, too, so that probably accounts for that ;)
