Rattle in the rear-end???

I need help, I have a rattle in the rear-end. It only occurs when I am decelerating regardless of the transmission. It does it with the clutch in or out and with the transmission in gear or not. I don't think it is the rear-end or transmisssion, but I am not sure...
No codes are being thrown.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

My car is a 2000 SS convertible with an M6, and dual SLP exhaust. Also other mods are SLP air box, smmoth bellows, TB Bypass, SLP MAF and K&N filter.:confused: :confused:

I am not sure how to call this problem without some more info.
How many miles on the car?
Does the rattle happen when making a turn?
When did it start?
What kind of work has been done to the car recently?
Have you pulled the rear diff cover?

My car does the same thing but u hear it more if u put the clutch in and turn to the left it makes a rattling noise. My car has 13000 miles on it and i got it when it had 8600. It has done it since i got it. The car is all stock. I really am boggled at what this is. I rattles a little when u turn to the right but if u give it gas it quits rattling. Is this a posi problem? Maybe a bearing prob? I still have a warranty so i would like to get this resolved. BTW - my car is a M6.

The Car has 50k on it, no work recently, it does not do this during turns only when decelerating. It started doing this a few months ago. Could it be a plate loose in the muffler or cat?
I have not pulled the diff cover off...

I think I would start by looking at the u-joints.
At 50k you may want to change the rear end lube and take a look
in the diff. I had a popping noise in my z28 when making turns.
Turned out to be a bad helical / axle spline gear in my zexel torsen. I ran a 12.8 at 110 and tore the z/t up going back for more.

I also have a very similar problem. I have an 01 WS6 A4 with 26000 miles and when slowing down below 30mph and/or making turns...especially lefts...I get a rattle that seems to be coming from the rear of the car. I've tighted down the jack, checked the hatch, brake calipers, shock mounts, nothing has gotten rid of it. Of course the warranty just expired in November....:mad:

My problem is exactly the same and it is especially when making left turns. Anyone have any ideas on the u -joint theory. Can that make a rattling sound? Or is it what i think it is the posi? I have been extremely careful with this car and i know the previous owner was very easy considering the shape of the car and the tires when i got it. The rear end fluid was changed at 8000 miles and it had tire rotations at 7500 and 13000. the fluid looked great when removed and i saw zero metallic object in the fluid. It looked clean and i checked over the rear end when the cover was off and it seemed great. Anyone have a clue as to whats happen to these three cars?

Dont know if this too late for you, but check the 2 retaining clips that hold the park brake shoe to the backing plate. When I was chasing rattles in the rear of my 99 Z28, I found that the clip on one side was unclipped, and the one on the other side was clipped but very loose.
I removed each clip, and held it in the vise and used a small hammer to re-tension the clip before re-installing. This seems to have cured a lot of rattling from the rear-end.

(Prior to this I also had both rear wheel bearings replaced and am using Mobil 80-140 Synthetic oil and GM additive.)

The reply to my mail message to Torsen (diff manufacturer) said that "the helical gears in the Torsen diff centre will make a rattling noise when the diff is not under load, typically when coasting at around 20Mph".
That's why I am using 80-140 diff oil.
Only other action I am now doing is to put some extra sound deadening into the rear of the car to reduce the Torsen rattle.

I am having the exact same noise in my 2002 Camaro Z28 with 42,000 miles on it. Manual transmission. It is really annoying me.

Did any of you find what was causing the noise?

I am not sure I follow you when you say the two retaining tabs that hold the park brake shoe to the backing plate. When I look at the hub there is a plate that the e-brake cable goes into, but it is held in place by two phillips-head screws. Can you elaborate please.
