Shifter question

Between B&M, Hurst and Pro 5.0 what shifter has a smoother operation (feels more natural)? Shorter throw? And is less likely to miss shifts? Also is there a major difference between short throw shifters and ones that are not? (i.e. B&M and Hurst are short throw were as the Pro 5.0 is not.) I’m really looking for people that have driven cars with these three different shifters and can give me feedback on the pros and cons of each. But anyone with one of these shifters can comment, so give me the rationale behind your reasons why one of them is better or worse.

they are all short throw shifters.. i have the b&m and love it, the advantage to the pro 5.0 is that u can get shorter sticks too, however, the b&m shift is absolutely beautiful.. i heard the hurst isn't as crisp as the pro 5.0 and b&m, so its a toss up, if u want a shorter stick, go pro 5.0, if not go b&m

Couldn’t you just cut down a B&M shifter and re-thread it? Also how much shorter is the Pro 5.0 compared to the B&M?

i wouldn't cut the b&m, u'd know why if u saw the bend in the stick/change in diameter...

as for the pro 5.0, i dont know how short it is when u get it, but u can buy the lou's short stick, which is real short

I've heard it's not as short as it could be - if it really bothered me, I could just take a portaband to it and shorten it a tad.......haven't bothered though.

You may have already done this, but I'll mention it anyhow - there are literally thousands of threads in the LT1 Tech forum that discuss this very subject.
You're not likely to get many people here that have had experience with all the shifters - but there are quite a few that hang out in the Tech forums that have.

Ok I’ve basically eliminated the Hurst shifter as an option it’s now between the B&M and the Pro 5.0. Can a Pro 5.0 be bought locally (i.e. Lordco or other parts stores) or does one have to order it out of the U.S.?

i have the hurst with Jarrods Short Stick and its awesome.

u can get them, and should get them from best buy, i paid $206 + tax for my b&m, and then $25 US for a hurst leather shift knob...

Now does the B&M or the Pro 5.0 come with their own shift knobs? Or do you have to buy them extra? How about $205 CDN taxes in for a B&M shifter:D :D

That's about what I paid for mine at Lordco.

They don't come with their own knobs.
The stock knob will fit back if you so desire, I didn't, so I bought a short leather B&M knob that isn't screwed on like the stocker - it fits quite loosely on the shifter and is tightened on with 3 set screws. It would still fit if I decided to shorten the stick in the future.

Except for getting the damn console apart and back together - that took 90% of the time.:think:

Hey Pandamonkey how much did you pay for the short leather B&M knob? And how do the set screws work? (ie is it a solid connection between the shifter and the shift knob)

I don't think it really matters. The B&M and the Hurst are nearly identical, both are billet aluminum, whereas the pro 5.0 is steel. I dunno why people are downing the Hurst, I've got one and I love it. With the hurst you can adjust the spring tension when you move through the gears. I don't think the others allow you to do this. I adjusted mine tight so when I upshift quickly to 3rd it goes right in.;) The only downside to the hurst is that it is the most expensive.

I can get the Hurst for only about $25 CDN more than the B&M so they are fairly close in price

It was a gift from my wife, so I don't know the exact price - Lordco has them always sitting on the back shelf.....

It's not exactly a solid connection.
It doesn't thread on, the hole of the knob is larger than the shifter handle, so before it is screwed it - it's rather wobbly and loose. After the set screws are tightened - is solid as a rock.

I looked for a handle for it that would screw on, I found none that I liked.
