I have a Viper alarm on my car and when I hit the alarm button sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesnt. Sometimes I have to smack the clicker to make it work and sometimes that does not even work. WTF????

New battery in the "clicker" maybe? :D

Also, try taking apart the "clicker" and cleaning the surface where the buttons make contact. There might be some "goo" on there that is preventing a good contact from being made.

although it may seem like you need to smack your remote to be able to lock/unlock the car, it could be that you don't even need to whack it. After checking what Brent said, (remote battery and clean the remote's terminals) check your car battery. When your car battery is extremely weak your alarm will not arm/disarm.

contact DEI about getting a replacement. I have the Matrix RS3 the first clifford alarm with the 2 way remote (white with blue and red buttons) and the remote sucked to where it would need a new battery every week and a half, so i called them and sent me old remote in and they sent me the new carbon fiber rsx 3.5 remote which is way better.

check the ground wire of the battery...it may be getting a bad connection, the alarm may also have a bad connection....if not.......go with an astroflex not a viper......if u drive an automatic i recomend the astroflex 3006, remote start and security :)
