Starting Problems

I have a problem with starting my car. I try to start it and it sounds like a couple cylinders are firing but then does not start. If I keep the motor turning over it sounds like it wants to start but then nothing. I smell a lot of gas too. I have tried to time it repeatedly but I think if I got close, it would run. Any idea's I can try maybe sensors.

Give some more info, like did it run one day and not the next, was it just worked on ( are the plug wires on right), was the motor just rebuilt ( is the distributer in 180 degrees off). If it just stopped running I would bet it is the control module. Could be a cracked or shorted dist. cap, bad coil , coil wire, etc.
Good luck
Dan

Did you pinch the distributor (or any of the) wiring harness between the block and transmission? I managed to do that once when installing a transmission late at night and had to pull it loose and move the wires. Maybe you smashed a wire and after sitting overnight being "crushed" by the bellhousing, it split the jacket and shorted to ground. That may explain your problem, just a guess.

Good luck!

When you had the tranny out did you let the engine rock back? The motor mounts allow enough movement for the distributor to hit the firewall and it will crack the cap every time.

i thought that was the problem too so i replaced the cap and still nothing.

I had same problem on my 89 Formula; wouldn't start, strong odor of gas. Pulled a spark plug and it was dripping wet. Turned out to be ECM in my case. Read here:

I put the stock chip in the original ECM just to see if it was the Hypertech prom casuing the flooding. When that didn't fix flooding, I changed the ECM. Ran the replacement ECM with the stock chip for a while to make sure problem was fixed. Then I reinstalled the Hypertech. Still running like a champ.:)

Doesn't have to be from a 91 Z28, other vehicles ECM's interchange:

Prom is application specific. I bought a rebuilt ECM from Checkers for 90 bucks.

Are the plugs wet? Did you investigate other possible causes of excess fuel, such as the regulator?

how would you know if the regulater is bad. i have a gauge on it and it is holding 40psi when it primes up and then 46pis when starting.
