automatic habit

i recently raced a ls1 fire bird formula against my stock z28. i noticed an aftermarket fuel pump hangin below his rear bumper and his exhuast was loud as hell. The upcoming stoplight had both of us in a slow creep just begging it would turn red on us. sure enough, i find myself about to face off with this 6 spd racer who probably has a **** load of work done to his car. and all i got to show for it is the soft sound of exhuat through a weld on pro-flo muffler. my eyes stay focused on the the cross traffics signal light. yellow! my left foot holds the brake while my right squeezes some 1200 rpms. just enough for the stock converter. the dude next to me is making a rucass, reving inconsistently; his rpms jump around like a unexperienced stick shifter. GREEN. i throw down full throttle as my weak ass 2.73's barely burnout and make a chirp as i cross the intersection. unexpectedly i look up to see the suped-up formula's reflextion in my rear view. i had thought for sure this car was gonna rape me and why shouldn't it. you know ive always heard the 6spds have an advantage over the a4. here sits the firebird in a blaze of smoke that bellowed out from the rear wheel wells almost covering the whole car. in a matter of 60 feet my distance lay at least 2-3 car lengths in front. Did this guy wanna race or just have a burn out contest. he must have wasted half his tires and 3 gear changes before he gained forward movement. its was to late! my little stock hole shot was to much for his tire-burner to catch up. The moral of the story is simple. i had to look up because he no hook up = he no catch up.
be sure ya got the traction to support ya horsepower package. i give props to all those automaitcs usin consistency habits to win, while those other 6 spds stand still n" slow at the tree like their tires spin. My auto bro's leave ya like raw meat/ cuz i saw ya rides lookin slow not hookin up on da street. ya best get ya tires stickin like football cleats. YA BETTER START HOOKIN UP SON!

So you like automatics  Thats nice. I'd rather bang a gear anyday of the week and beable to use 4:10s or something like that in the rear and still get good gas mileage ;) Not to mention the T-56 is a helluvalot stronger than a 4l60E :o

A TRUE DRAG RACE STARTS FROM A STAND STILL, BUT I WILL ADMIT THE 6SPDS HAVE RANK FROM A HIGHWAY ROLL. I BELIEVE UNDER FAIR REGULATIONS THAT AUTOMATIC VECHILES ARE MORE CONSISTENT FOR BRACKET RACING.

Embarrassing auto owners everywhere...
Autos= better for high hp drag racing applications, and from a launch.
Manuals= better for the street at more normal hp levels, and from a roll.

I think the auto vs. manual thing has been beat to death. Everyone should know the pros and cons of each by now...

 "Yo son Yall better Be hookin da up on dat street" ,Most cars on the street with torque usually spin the tires when the gas is applied suddenly, especially through a manual transmission,in any case you got lucky its not like auto's cant get the tires loose also........

your right, my automatic and 2.73s dont make for a very good tire burner. What you recommend as a good stall converter/ rear end gear ratio thats streetable?

3.42s or 3.73s are streetable and great for automatics. I don't know about the converter.

Judging from his superb use of the english language, this guy sounds like he might have gotten the honor roll a time or two back in elementary school, am I right???;)

So since you sound like you've got the "411" on dragracing and street cars in general, I'll offer my advice on your gear/stall question...

I would without a doubt go with no less than 5.13s out back and a minimum of a 5,500 non-lock up converter.

That should make for an interesting ride down the street:)

To me it's more than just the racing with a manual. In my eyes that's the way these cars are supposed to be. I know that auto's are better for racing when your car gets to a certain point, 11's, 10's, etc, but since I'm not that serious about racing I have to drive a manual. Cruising around in your sick sounding Camaro and hearing the shifts. I hate the sound of A4's with an exhaust when they're just cruising, it's so sad. And above all of that, it's fun. I can honestly say that driving a manual is one of the most enjoyable things I've ever done.

That's just my opinion.

i totally agree. manual trannys are much more fun to drive around. my previous 3 cars were all standard transmissions and know i just want to try something different.

go race this guy (http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=226744)

1.485 60', 10.967 @124.96
1.483 60', 10.969 @ 124.86
1.450 60', 10.93 @124.76

i'd say that's freakin consistent AND he has a 6spd!!!

i guess the take home message you are saying is "anything can happen on the street"...something we all knew:rolleyes:
