Getting ready to take a long road trip & want to get the best radar detector for the money.

I have heard of two so far:

Valentine 1; not sold locally,mail order/online $399 (best?)

Passport 8500; slight step down from the V1? avail locally & cheaper $299, almost as good?

Thanks,

I bought a sweet cobra for about 150 but i cant justify 400 dollars for a Valentine or 300 for a Passport...........

Google on "radar detector tests" and you'll find a lot of info.

I used to have a $150 cobra with a compass that i got from best buy , i recently (2 days ago) got a v1 and it is amazing, no more false alarms, and it tells you where the radar is coming from. if i didnt get it for my birthday i probably wouldnt have paid that much money for it , i would have bought another cobra. just my $.02

This has been discussed numerous times and there is never a clear winner.......I guess its just personal preference but those are definately the 2 best out there

I just recently bought the passport 8500 and can say that it is WITHOUT a doubt the best radar i've ever owned. I used to have a whistler, then i bought a cobra, and now im riding with the passport.

I like the passport for its extremly loud alert( i love blasting my radio), and the mute button and alert light on the cigarette plug is a nice touch.

Before i bought this radar i was contemplating the V1, but spending $500 on a radar detector is rediculous(some also consider $300 rediculous but its all about how much $$$ your willing to spend)

The only real con about the passport 8500 is the fact that it doesn't give the direction of the radar that is being detected(as the V1 offers), but other than that the V1's got nothing on the Passport 8500:D

check ebay though, it looks like the passports go for around $200-$225:eek:

Good Luck,
