Ok, last night when I was driving my girl home in the RS, I got on the gas, and BOOM. Didnt know whats up but when i thought about i think its my tranny mount. I had to go mail a wheel out this morning and on the way it did the same thing. When i hit the gas it that same loud ass thud. ???Tranny mount???

Did it happen just as the gear was shifting? If so, that is the tranny mount, more than likely.

Yep, sounds like the mount. So now the car costs $325 :p

DJ, sounds like you have other problems because I have a poly mount and not have to change it that often. You might have an imbalance in the DS or something wrong witht he rear end that breaks the mounts that often

well, i know my motor mounts were BAD, and i just had them replaced... you think bad motor mounts would kill my tranny mount? i only break tranny mounts when i abuse the iroc on the street, lol, they usually last me a little more than 1500 miles before they break.

what should i check for to see if it's a problem with the rear end or the driveshaft?

Bad motor mounts can cause a car to go through tranny mounts as well....the vibration and excess flexing due to engine movement tears the rubber up quickly (assuming a stock rubber mount.)

Poly mounts are MUCH tougher, but some people just can't adjust to the increased drivetrain noise they create. Personally I like poly trans AND engine mounts.

So you changed the engine mounts? In that case, change the tranny mount and see how things go. You could unbolt the DS at the rear and take it out to a DS shop and they can tell you if the DS is bent or out of balance or even ok.

Hey sorry for now reply, i was busy all weekend. Aklim, its thuds every time i hit the gas, i know its not the tranny but i wanted to make sure. I got a job at a chopper shop now so im gonna see if i can fab a solid mount for it. Or if its cheaper how much are they?

do NOT go solid if you are running rubber or poly engine mounts, after time, you will break the mount bolts or the tailshaft housing of the trans

Whoa! lol. Just curious but how does that happen. Looks like im going to have to do both solid trans and motor mounts then?

I'd do poly on all unless you want all the noise, harshness and vibration to transmit into your seat.

Sonds like ill be going all poly next weekend. And my rear end feels 'loose'. My iroc is 8 years older than my RS and feels WAY tighter. Im gonna try new shocks and poly bushings maybe a bigger sway bar. Any suggestions?

anyone run a stock trans mount with a hose clamp around it?

transxtreme

HAHA, well it turn outs that the tranny mount wasnt broke at all. the Bolts that were supposed to be holding it to the trans were gone. How would a hose clamp around your mount help???

it keeps it from getting ripped in 2.

that happened to me in my S10 one time, i thought i bottomed out on a boulder or something cause i herd/felt a big ass clang, and then it grinded once every 3-4 feet, i thought i was just dragging something but when i got on the road it didnt change, so i pulled off and found my trans was totaly off the mount, not much fun

i doubt that hose clamp would do anything but mess it up.

i doubt that hose clamp would do anything but mess it up

why is that? Explain to me how it would "mess it up" ???

I took a torn mount, cleaned it really well, then used some crazy glue to put it back together. Then I took a good quality stainless steel hose clamp from a large radiator hose and tightened it down right in the middle of the mount. That glued mount with the hose clamp is still in use today.

Don't knock it until you tried it.

So where's the duct tape? You cannot do a ghetto repair without duct tape. :)
All the bushings in my car are slowly being switched over to poly. Go poly :)

Oh, and a wonderbar, STB, subframe connectors, bigger sway bars, all poly bushings, new shocks/struts, and springs should make your car feel great :) I love my new STB, I cannot wait to do the subframe connectors.

Ghetto?

it's not ghetto, it's just something that you had to spend money on that I didn't have to spend money on. I'm saving my money for refills on my N2O bottle. For example- my frame connectors, they're strong and cost me nothing. Next is building my own STB's and then i'm making a new rear axle housing using 9 bolt outer tubes with PBR brakes and an 8.8 inch ford center section 3.73 posi, this will cost me some money, about $150 I figure. I'd tell you how to do it but it's probably too "ghetto" for ya.

I'm still waiting to hear how a hose clamp will mess anything up.

I never said anything was wrong with it, I would rather just spend the $8 though :)
I have duct tape holding my PCV filter in right now untill I can thing of somthing better to do with it :)
And i'm sure I could make my own subframe connectors and strut tower brace if I knew how to weld, but I don't, so i'm stuck buying the things for now :) $110 shipped for a 3pt edelbrock isn't too bad.

I broke a tranny mount on my 3rd gen as we pulled out to leave for the beach. I made it all the way to the beach and back with a pair of hose clamps holding the mount for the torque arm to the crossmember (we were in a hurry to get moving). It was quick and dirty, but it held until I changed it out for a poly mount.
