67 firebird vs. turbo supra (modified)

know this guy with a 67 bird. 400, with performer rpm heads, max ported, 950 cfm carb, making around 465 rwhp with 3.90 gears. well, we were cruising around in myrtle beach a few months back, when we were approached by a white turbo supra with slicks and skinnies. though it had to be something serious, since not many ricers run slicks ans skinnies on the street. well, we pulled over and talked..... blah blah blah he claimed 600 rwhp and low 10 sec ET's and some big ass garret twin turbo setup. well, we were scared but raced anyway.... we were even off the line, even with our 315/35's out back vs his slicks. we pulled gracefully through 2nd and killed him in 3rd. he claimed he had over revved the 3rd shift and wanted a rematch. results were the same through 1st, and 2nd, and we shifted into 3rd and we barely made it through a redish yellow light. well, the supra wasn't so lucky to get the yellowish red light, and he got blank red. he continued through the light. we looked back to see if he was going to go through the light, as we saw a for escort pulled out. the supra nailed the escort at probably around 80. tore off the whole side of the supra, and left the escorts hood slotted into the side of the supras front fender. i swear it was like something we see on fast and the furious.

no ricers were injured in this ass kicking/wreck

When you race on the street, no one wins, everyone is a looser. Especially when innocent bystanders get hurt.

Back in my street racing days things were pretty much like they are now.... cars getting wrecked from time to time, people getting hurt or worse. There's a reason I don't do it any more- and it's not a lack of desire for that adrenaline rush. It's stuff like that. See a few of those and you KNOW you're living on borrowed time- it will EVENTUALLY involve you directly if you stay at it long enough.

I started to "see the light" when I was racing down crowded city streets at 100+ MPH for $50- a crowd of bystanders parting like the Red Sea in front of us AS WE WERE RUNNING.

I'll give you kudos on the kill. Always fun for me to see old iron take down a modern high-tech ride with "claimed" HP in the stratosphere. Just take it easy out there. Running redlights tells me you should not have been going at it through 3rd gear in that area to begin with- population, cross-traffic, too short a distance for a good run and zippo time to react to a problem. I won't be a hipcrite and say "don't street race" as I have done it myself many many times. Just.... take it easy and THINK before you plant the pedal. Your brain is your best defense against problems- listen to it.

well, i guess i didn't get what i was looking for in responses. this story was told in intention to remind people on how dangerous it can be. notice i didn't say anything was fun about it. if anybody would have been hurt, i wouldn't have posted anything, but i was thinkin about it as my buddy from myrtle beach called and said he had spoken to the supra driver, and the supra driver laughed about it. besides a high risk insurance plan, that guy is ok and unhurt. sorry if i affended anyone, but i do have plenty of track stories/street stories that are plenty safe.

by the way, this area was not populated at all, and that stop light had to be the only stop light in a 2 mile radiuis on that road. cross traffic is usually not heavy either from what my friend said... he was doing the driving. just one unlucky day for 2 cars and their drivers

Yeah, everytime I go to Ocean city (MD) or Myrtle there always seems to be an "old school" car show on, see the most beautiful cars that are decades old

yeah, my dream has always been the 98-02 ws6 with a head/cam package or a 422/427 motor. thing is, about 5 or 6 guys around my area have them and take them out racing on the streets on friday/saturday nights. it's kind of killing my dream. they all all black too, except one.... which is my favorite. i like to be different, so maybe a cadny apple red paint would benefit me. i also partly own a 69 firebird convertible i share with ym dad and getting ready to inherit a 67 camaro rs convertible.....love at first site

well, it was not organzied by any means... and yes, that is rediculous. i can remember kids in high school setting those up and police scanners and everything. i did state that it was put on the board to give a lil wakeup reminder to the dangers of street racing. however, we do it every weekend here in indiana very safely. plenty of long straight roads.... in populated areas, but we've grown up around here and know the ins and outs. we often have 40-50 year old guys out doing a lil street action as well. i may have been guilty for being in the car, but it was just one time gone bad. i wouldn't say that myrtle beach is the best place to do it though
