Central PA Z 06-03-2002, 01:58 PM Well, they are not painted, instead I dyed them along with my carpet and door panels. My seats are now black on the outside and red on the inside, door panels are red on top and black on bottom and the carpet is now black as well. Pictures in sig on page 14 if anyone is interested.

95_RipperZ 06-03-2002, 03:08 PM Ya that looks good.
I think he died only the gray part of the seats and the other part was black to begin with. Do you think white would work on that or would it be to light?
350 HRSS 06-03-2002, 03:42 PM Your seats look REALLY good. It looks really uniform. I am impressed. How hard was it?
It looks great! You used plasti-coat paint?

Yea, plasti-coat black for the outside parts of the seats and VHT Red for the inner part. Really wasn't that hard to do, just took alot of time using duct tape to match the contours of the seat seams. I first taped up the inner part (Which is now red) and used the black dye on the whole seat. Gave it 3 coats (allowing about 15 minutes between coats), till the end cause the dye absorbs into the cloth alot. I let dry overnight and removed the tape. The following evening, I taped along the opposite edge and covered the rest to prevent any overspray. In total, I put on 4 coats of the red on cause it seemed to absorb into the light gray more than the black did. Both types of dye I got at A&A Auto Parts and it is a dye made for carpet.

Trans AM 22502 06-04-2002, 01:58 PM I was about to wait to get some Sparco Torino's for $1200, but after seeing those, I'll gladly attempt to try that instead. Black and Red are my "theme colors" as well. Don't suppose that works on leather?

Wish I would have known that before hand. I could have maybe searched the junk yards and bought them for under what I paid in paint + two evenings worth of work. Oh well.

You'd be looking LONG and HARD for those seats, then. Apparently, they were a somewhat rare option. Your seats still rule, anyway http://web.camaross.com/bb/cool.gif What would happen if water got on them, though? Would the dye come off, or something?

Well the other day I left my windows down and a sudden T-storm came around. Till I got down to shut the windows it had already started to rain. The door pannel was wet and just a little on the front seats were wet. I just left it go and didn't wipe the water off. I didn't notice any change of color, water spots or runs. This stuff is a dye, so it doesn't actually cover the fabric per say like paint does, it changes the color of the fabric.

MILESF 06-05-2002, 01:40 PM I looked long and hard for a set of "Flame Red" seats for my convertible. No luck. They are quite rare. Only offered in 94 and 95. Yours look just as good!!! Did you remove the seats to dye them?

Yea, not hard at all. Four 13mm nuts for the front seats each, (I don't have electric seats...so I'm not sure what you would have to d/c with those), the back seats each have one 13mm bolt on the front and the seat back has two 13mm nuts on the bottom edge. Plus, I had to take the plastic seat belt keepers off the front seats, only two philips screws on each. Probably 15 minutes max to take all the seats out.

BTW Fred, I just looked at and remembered seeing your car some time ago. I think yours would really look good with seats like mine. That would really compliment the black / red you have going on. I still envey your car, very nice!! And I've also looked around for the momentary switch you have for your Performance Shift Mod and can't find one like it anywhere. Mind saying where ya got it?? Thanks.

Marky82 06-05-2002, 03:30 PM I love the seats! TheV6Bird is my brother, I was the one with those seats in my old camaro before it got totaled. I have tan seats in my 97 camaro convertible and i'm searching everywhere to find my old kind. I may end up just dying them black, I don't think red will take with a tan interior. How much did it cost in dye?
sfGi8nt 06-05-2002, 04:21 PM the seats look really good, like they came like that!
Also, are those door panels/handles Black?
How did you get it black?

Well the dye cost around $5.50 a can for the VHT red and something like $4.50 for the Plasti-coat black. I can't recall how much of each I used, but I believe the recipts added up to be around $70 for the whole project, (That also included regular black paint for the back plastic pannels).

Yes...they are black. From factory, I origionally had a light / dark gray combination, (Except for parts of the dash and the center console). I changed everything in the car to black - door pannels and the carpet in the map pocket area, floor carpet, headliner, sun visors, parts of the dash, all the plastic trim in the car and of course the seats, which you have already seen. I've slowly been working on the whole project for the past few weeks and finished up with the seats.

And at least 1996 http://web.camaross.com/bb/wink.gif My buddy has them in his 1996 SS. flame red interior (http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid21/pef96a3a45d3884ec818245015aa7a5cd/fdb36979.jpg.orig.jpg)

MILESF 06-06-2002, 10:48 AM John, Thanks. Now that I see how your seats turned out, I'm doing mine in the near future. Did you use VHT Penetrating Colour Dye in Red Satin SP947?
I got my switch from a company called McMaster-Carr out of Atlanta, GA. 404-346-7000. Stock #6944K11, SPST-NO push button sealed pendant switch. $12.14.
Hope that helps.

Fred, yea...that was the red I used. They also had a flame red which I wish I would have bought instead. The red satin is a deep red, and I sorta wish I would have went with the bright red. And yes, I think I'm going to go with that switch instead of the one I had. Thanks, I appreciate it.
