I have just bought a nitrous kit for my car....I am planning on sparying a 150 shot with stock bottom end. I want to run factory heat range plugs and my regular timming curve that was programmed by PCMforless.(whish advaces the timing) My question is what octane rating should i use with this setup to not have perdetonation??? I was thinking about the 110 -112 should be good...what do you guys think???

why not go to 1 heat range colder on the plugs? easy way to start to preent detonation. as far as advanced timing and stock plugs and a 150 shot, doesnt matter much what octane you use,it's gonna cause problems.
110-112 might work, but then you will be killing O2 sensors.

so is the only way to retard timing is to get an msd ignition setup that will allow me to play with it??
also if i do go to colder plugs...could i get away with 100 octane??

i ran a 175 shot on a stock longblock with stock timing and pulling 3-4 degree's with a MSD digital 6 and NGK tr6 plugs(supposedly 1 range colder then stock).i also used 100-104 unleaded race gas and had no problems.
and yes aftermarket ignition is the only way to pull timing.

I looked at msd and the only way to retard the timing is to buy an ignition box from them and then attach a timing control to it....Does ANYONE make something that you can attach to the stock ignition and retard the timing....maybe something that causes the Knock module to retard the timing.....If not how hard would it be to make one....I am thinking if you supply the right voltage to the KM it will retard the timing automatically for the nitrous run

well the digital 6 has a built in retard, the MSD 6btm has a timing retard knob, also look at Mallory and Crane for alternatives.

what about this.....Say I use my knock sensor to retard my timing....I can wiring in an adjustable resistor and give a false reading on my knock senor where it "thinks" the engine is knocking and will retard the timing. what do you guys think?? it would basically be like an o2 sim for the knock sensor

i suppose it "could" work, but the big question is if you do that, and then get real knock, will the knock sensor still do it's job?
imo too risky for my tastes.

well I would only do it with good fuel 100 plus and only during the n20 run...not all the time

sounds like you want to do this without spending alot of cash BUT your just taking a big chance and it might cost you BIG in the end.
Go with the MSD Dig6+, $280 (or similiar). It's all you need plus the colder plugs!

I have spent a lot of time researching this and Heavychevy is absolutely right. The digital 6 and colder plug is the only cheap way to run nitrous. Probably won't need race gas for 150 shot if you pull 4 degrees of timing.
