JETMAN95Z28 07-29-2002, 09:22 PM I've alwasy LOVED the look of the older style Z/28 emblems and am thinking of putting a set on my Black '96 Z. The factory black emblems are practically invisible on the black paint. Has anyone else made this addition? What kind of 2-sided tape does the factory used to attach these? What do I use to attach the new (old) emblems? How hard is it to remove the stock ones??? Anything a blow dryer can't remove?? ANY input would be greatly appreciated!!!

Grn96Z 07-30-2002, 10:45 AM Ive had them on my car for about a year now, the first day I had them on a guy in a 2000 SS pulled up next to me and told me they looked amazing, then proceeded to put about 5 car lengths on me, lol. It was cool anyway
JETMAN95Z28 07-30-2002, 11:59 AM Thanks for the input guys. No one mentioned on how to get the old emblems off as well as what I should use to re-attach the new emblems. Any ideas?? I would imagine the heat of a blow dryer would be enough to get the 2 sided tape off of the stockers, but where do you get the stuff to put them back on??

I believe you can take them off using a hair drier and then gently applying a fishing line.
By the way, will you be interested in selling your stock Z28 badges afterwards?
Two of mine were stolen by some jerks and I've looking forward to get some new ones(they did a good job though, not messing with the finishing) http://web.camaross.com/bb/frown.gif
JETMAN95Z28 07-30-2002, 05:47 PM thanks for the fishing line input... hadn't thought of that. Just figured I'd get it soft enough with heat, and pry it back SLOWLY with a fingernail or other non-paint scarring material. also thanks, but I'll probably keep my old emblems just in case the possible "next owner" isn't as fond of my ideas as I am. I've saved all the stock parts from my "customizations" so far.
CARGASM 07-30-2002, 06:26 PM I have to say that I was one of the originals to do this about 4 years ago, and I have never had anything but compliments. I have some pics in my sig but as far as I can remember there aren't any close-ups.
As much as I want to tell everyone not to do it, so that I can stay unique, it does look really nice.
As for install, I got originals from a '68 Z. The backs had mounting posts that I cut off and filed down. The emblems I found are bent at the wrong angle, so you will need to bend them accordingly. I used two layers of 3M double sided tape to attach them, because the backs were grooved and I didn't want the metal touching the paint.
I found my emblems at a Camaro swap meet, however I think that they are easy to come by now from places like Year One.
~Adam
ZForce 07-30-2002, 11:49 PM I bought mine from www.camarosandclassics.com (http://www.camarosandclassics.com)
They are OEM and cost a little more.
I used a razor blade that is made for removing such item - not sure where you'd get them because I got mine from the paint shop, but they are super thin, flexable and about 6 inches long x 1 inch wide.
On the 69 emblems, I also cut the studs off on the fender emblems and had to flatten them out as they are made to fit the contour of the 69 fender. I used a jack press we have at work to make them flat - just wrapped them up well and placed them between 2 steel plates and pressed them nice and flat.

JETMAN95Z28 07-31-2002, 11:14 PM Thanks for the pics HAWK. That's EXACTLY what I thought they'd look like on a black car.... awesome! Much beter contrast than the factory black on black. It looks like you used the "standard" '69 fender emblem on the sides as opposed to the bigger grill sized like mentioned in a previous post. One question, though, what did you do on the back of your car? Any pictures there? I've seen both the bigger sized grill emblem dead center of the rear (like in '69) and the chopped slash (/)version under the tail light in the 4th Gen. factory location.

Take a look at my pictures (link in sig - look under modifications and scroll to the bottom) I have a custom rear tail light panel. Had the camaro letters filled in and painted black then installed a 69 rear (Big) emblem in the center - fits great. On the rear emblem I did drill holes and use the mounting studs to attach it.

fastcamz28 08-01-2002, 08:41 PM Thanks Hawk for posting my pics!!
Jetmann,
The back is stock right now. However, I plan to replace the black z28 w/ a '70-74 vintage z28 next to the bow tie. I will call upon Hawk to assist me in posting pics at that time. The '70-74 emblem fits perfect, looks almost exactly like the '68's, and is just a bit smaller. I got mine from Year One; www.nextgenparts.com; (http://www.nextgenparts.com;) part # 934N; $29.95 ea. Hope this helps!
JETMAN95Z28 08-01-2002, 11:22 PM I got my emblems today UPS and it looks like I only have to cut off about 1/4" top and bottom of the "/" since I bought 3 fender emblems. Now I just need to find the 3M tape and get them on!
JETMAN95Z28 08-02-2002, 09:55 PM http://www.yearone.com/serverfiles/fbshopmain2.asp?cat=8
If you go here it says that number is for a '68. It looks just like my '69 fender version # N939. Exactly how tall are those emblems.... top of the "/" to bottom ?? I really would rather NOT chopping of a 1/4" top and bottom of mine if not necessary. I've actually considered leaving the Bowtie after pulling the current black plastic version. The '69 Fender emblem fits really well just to the left of the Bowtie and between the indented "O" in Camaro and the bottom left corner of the right rear turn signal...... ALL without cutting.... unless this 934N fits EXACTLY where the old unit did without cutting. Please let me know. Jeff
fastcamz28 08-03-2002, 01:18 AM Jetman,
I don't have the measurements; will do that in the morning. I don't know about a '69 going on the back, and I agree w/ not chopping off anything as I think it would mess up the look of the emblem. I saw the '70-74 z28 emblem on a 2001 SS on the right side of the bowtie on the back panel and it fit perfectly w/o any cutting. That is the look I'm going after. For the front fender units, I had the installers drill holes for the pins on the back of the emblems as the curvature of the emblem doesn't allow it to fit flush so 2-way tape was out. As you can tell from my pics, it appears the emblem is flush w/ the fender. Only when you get up close can you tell there is any space between the emblem and the fender. The '70-74 emblem apears to fit flush against the back panel so I plan to use 2-way tape for that one. If you place your '69 emblem to the left of the bowtie please post pics; I would like to see how that looks. Thanks!
fastcamz28 08-03-2002, 01:50 AM I just ordered the emblem for the back panel. It is the '73 grill emblem, part # FJ644 @ $35.95. Of the '70-74 emblems, it is the only one I could find where the "Z" was red & the "28" was white; all the rest showed the "28" in black w/ a red "Z". None of them have the / between the "Z" & the "28" so that may explain why they fit so well on the back panel under the tail light. As soon as I get it installed, I will post pics. Hope this helps!
