SFB767 02-01-2004, 05:06 PM I have this annoying sound at idle and low speeds that sounds like a sqweaky belt.
I heard something about a TSB for a pulley belt tensioner or something like that for the '99s. Is that what this is? It sounds like there's 100 parakeets under my hood!
I went outside to check everything over, but can't find anything loose. Is there anything I can do to get rid of this noise?
99blackSS 02-01-2004, 05:15 PM When I had a squeaky noise from the belts it turned out my water pump was broken and leaking coolant onto the belts.
Check your coolant level.

:) I thought my belts were squealing and replaced both of them. I needed to change them anyway cause it cheap insurance w/102k miles.
Then it sounded like I had a blower under the hood or altenator was bad. In checking I found it was the idler plley, on the same side as altenator (not the tensioner on passenger side).
I replaced the bearing in it and now NO!! blower or belt noise.
Replacing the bearing from a bearing shop was almost as expensive as the complete pulley from GM.
They, GM wanted $48, (I know, some one will say they can get one for $5.99) but I never find those deals.
I bought one of those cheap stephecopes (however in the hell you spell it) and found the little bugger bearing.
95GRNZ 02-01-2004, 08:37 PM Defective idler pulley is very common in 99's. I personally know of four 99's which have needed a replacement and countless others I've read about on different boards.
Not sure whether there is a TSB aout it or not, but that's most likely your problem.

Jilly 02-01-2004, 10:17 PM My serpentine belt was just changed recently because it squealed really bad. It got embarassing to drive around like that. :shame:
horseplay 02-10-2004, 05:28 AM I believe GM put out some sort of service bulletin for this..its a little over $100 to have a GM dealer fix it....it happens in some of thier trucks too. My 99 sounds like a flock of sick birds at idle right now....I definitely need this fix
SFB767 02-10-2004, 06:23 AM You know what's really odd? My car isn't doing it anymore or it's just BARELY making the noise.
thezisking 02-10-2004, 06:23 AM My 2000 Silverado does it too. It sounds like the bearings in the clutch fan.

Same thing happened to me. It sounded really bad for a while, and then it would go away. A couple weeks later the sound would come back. Finally I got sick of it and changed the belts.
lil_mikey69 08-02-2004, 06:17 PM I've got the exact same problem. Sometimes it sounds god awful, other times nothing at all. I also sorta have the "blower" noise too.
Should I plan on getting the idler pulley replaced first, and then going from there if the problem continues?
SFB767 08-02-2004, 06:21 PM Wow, this post came back from the dead. :D
I never fixed the sqweak and it just went away.

Used the search feature.
Don't be fooled by the belt. We've had the car for like 3 years. Had the belt replaced twice, and the problem was fixed. It came back again like 8 months later. Now I think I'll try getting something else replaced.
It makes me embrassed too Jilly :D
1stls1 08-02-2004, 09:00 PM Wow, this is funny, I was just talking to the wife about mine doing this! It sound soooo uncool! I do have a extened warr, it will be in for service soon. I'm too worried about the water pump freezing up and tossing my belts!
Onez4u2bn 08-03-2004, 02:03 AM Mines doing the little sqweaking noise to. I did the ghetto thing for now and sprayed some PAM cooking spray on it and it stopped lmao. Only does it here and there now. Before it was a little worse, like when I went and picked the car up. That sqweakand the piston/valve whatever tapping made it sound like crap but it runs and runs good right now. Have had no problems out of this car.
1stls1 08-03-2004, 06:57 AM Not worried about tossing a belt putting PAM on it?
Onez4u2bn 08-04-2004, 12:07 AM Lol, actually i never thought of that. I just wanted that belt to stop squeaking :p
