Lafontaine Pontiac/Cadillac loses a customer...
Walked in to check out the cars. Started talking with the salesperson, asked if there was a GTO there.
She said yes... I said I'd like to see it.
She then told me that they weren't selling them for GMS.
To which I said:
"Well then, I won't be buying a car from you, ever."
And walked.
Scratch one dealer off my list for life.

Seems like they would go out the way to honor this for at the very least professional courtesy, and at most, ending up with a black mark from GM.

Dealers have the option of honoring or not honoring this program??

Wanna know the truly sick part about this?
The dealer is REIMBURSED by GM for the potential difference in the sale as GMS is a lower price than the car can be sold at a profit by the dealer.

There have always been certain vehicles that you can't get w/ GMS, typically hot sellers and popular new models. Its only been the last few years that you could get C5's w/ GMS. Not sure when exactly it became available, but in 1999, you still could not get them. May have been different back in the GMS/GMO days, but I'm not sure. It doesn't suprise me at all that the GTO isn't available w/ GMS yet, but you can get CTS's with it! I wouldn't take it personally.
And there is precedence in other industries. In the airline biz, employees and family can usually travel free, but during the summer months to certain destinations, there may be an embargo which prevents you from flying there until peak season is over. Basically it boils down to supply and demand. Whenever they're unable to sell every GTO they have for whatever price they want, then you'll see GMS, or in the case of the airline employee...palm trees.

So, they don't sell me a Cadillac, which is what I've been looking at in the first place.

I can understand the frustration. But as has been said, no dealer is required to sell at discount prices. It's up to a buyer to find their bottom line and sometimes it takes a little time and patient negotiation.
I will say this about LaFontaine. I would never hesitate to buy a new car from them. I've had several Pontiacs fixed under warranty by them. And while they've made a couple mistakes here and there, overall they are very careful and considerate with my cars (I'm absolutely **** about my cars). Bob Sellers remains my favorite local dealer... but Lafontaine will be in the running the next time I get a new Pontiac. If you go to Bob Sellers, ask for Keith Wilson, their resident muscle car and GTO expert.
If you live on the east side of Metro Detroit, check out Noonan Pontiac. I've also had work done there and they have a cool little schematic they use when you pull in, to record any scratches/dings present on your car upon arrival for service.
