if you really want to win, stop thinking about hp. while yes the hp is a great thing, its all about who hooks.
one is to get either drag radials, or some street ets. with a good hook youll have the upper hand.
two, when you put the 306 in, make sure you either tune it yourself, or get someone who knows what they are doing.
three, you really dont want to run more than 125 on a stock bottom end. there are a lot of people that have run 150, but i dont take chances with my stuff.
that should be enough to put you over the top.

150 is fine with a stock bottom end,GOOD fuel,cold plugs,and timing retard,and a good fuel pump.
i ran a 175 on a stock longblock and when i pulled the motor for a rebuild everything looked perfect. it's ALL in the tuning.definately do not start out with a big shot, untill you get a feel for tuning the car with a smaller shot, and learn to read the plugs for detonation.
also as said above, traction is key,all the power in the world means nothing if you cant hook.

Ya, What racinLT1 said. I run a 175 shot all the time and will be going to a progressive 250 shot this year, all with a stock bottom end. :D

my "one time" use of the 175 lasted about 4 months. never regretted it at all.
there is a fellow on the board i believe his name is "GeorgeDebski" has an impala ss spraying 200+ on a stock bottom end,but he has an absolute KILLER fuel system, been doing it for a few years i believe.
