Okay Jason closed our other one since it got so big. Lets try to keep this going with new ideas, here is the info currently and a copy of my original post. I would like to thank you all for the work you have done on these, and also Brent a special thanks for hosting the images. Remember guys this is for us all to hopefully share with one another, make sure to send anything you come up with to Brent and he will post on his page here ---> http://www.bfranker.badz28.com/fbody/overlays.htm

Brents email : bfranker@tampabay.rr.com

<<<<<<<<<<<< Original Post >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Okay as we all know they are allot of companies and people selling these white faced, ac, headlight, and shifter plate overlays. Well they are just making these out of Photo Paper. I have all the fronts and can scan them if someone will help make different designs and colors for all to use. If you will do these I will be more than happy to store them and distribute them to others. This will save us all allot of money and give us more options. I have several ideas myself as I did this about 2 years ago myself. But since that time I have not used Photoshop and lost touch with the basics. So if intersted in helping out email me and I will try and help as much as I can. I can get the faces for all years Camaros and TA's to scan so thats no problem, just need someone to edit these.....

How do we actually use these? Do we need like label paper to print em out, cut em out and just stick em on or what?

I just went through all of that last post but didn't find anything on how to get from template form to actually putting it in the car. It was ended right when that was being talked about. Thanks for any help cause I wanna try designing and printing some of these.

I think this is a great idea. I studied through the first 6 pages of the last post before my eyes went numb. Viper, is there any way you (or any other volunteer) could host a database of AAaaaalllll those scans? Its difficult to search through the posts to find the proper one. Also, with a decently thumbnailed web page, it'd be easier to follow with everyone's additions. just an idea, and keep up the awesome work guys. we're all grateful.
Joe
EDIT: maybe brent could host? or someone tell me if he already has?
EDIT NUMBER 2: I'm an idiot, i just found brent's page. sorry people.

I have already done mine. I did the white and changed the numbers to black, and the bulbs to red which results in a red type indiglo at night. You don't need to worry about glueing them in place, once they are sized and cut properly the piece that fits back on the top hols them firmly in place. Here are a few pictures, the night shots are on the second page of that album. Leave me a message on that forum and let me know what you think.

Brent, what is the best way to print out the images in your page?? Is it better to save as? If so, what should I open it with? Or can I just print it off IE? Thanks a lot.

I'd love the black checkered flag on the 93-97 (pref 94) Z28 (150 mph speedo). No one has done this but on the 98+ it was done and looks super. Anyone care to take two seconds and do this for me? Email me if you got time and did it.

Brent, i just emailed you some of my productions. They're somewhat cool(i think http://web.camaross.com/bb/biggrin.gif ), about 4 hours of work total. If anyone expresses interest, i'll put more effort into them. and the heartbeat ones can be easily customized to different colors. Is anyone else working? and does anyone have a scan of a 95 V6 110mph speedo cluster? please? thanks people!

Well all you have to do is peel off the stock hvac and light overlays and that should give you all the light you need. The stock overlays are just held on by glue, so it is really easy to peel em off, and they are thick, so dont worry about tearing them or something... anyways, I finally got a set printed up and played around with it and the light shines through perfectly. Ill post pics tonight.

A couple things to think about... "printing" these out on photopaper will eventually result in a sun-faded mess. Have you guys thought about the fact that the stock and aftermarket are basically a silkscreening process (paint more or less) they are not ink on paper. Also, if you are going to try this, I am a graphic designer and can tell you photoshop is not the best program for something like this. You would want to do it in Illustrator, so it can be laid out in precision and it would be done in vectors rather than pixels which is Photoshop.

I did the 93-96 HVAC and Headlight designs as a vector file for the character overlay. I can pull the background layer into photoshop or photopaint and put whatever picture I want then overlay the caracters in CorelDraw in whatever color.

If anyone has a use for this, here it is:
hl&hvac (http://nvader.home.mindspring.com/Images/hvac_design_final.cdr) design
The file is a *.cdr created in CorelDraw 10.

Here is a *.jpeg (http://nvader.home.mindspring.com/Images/hvac_final.jpg) render of the design I am doing for my 93 Z28.

Hope this helps somebody.

Ditto on the '93-96 Firebird guage overlay...

I took a picture with a non digital camera and scanned it in and fooled with photoshop.. it is going slow and I think it is too pixelated to look good.. I am hesistant to take the needles off to scan mine in...

Any idea what a broken cluster from a junkyard would cost?

What's with the shortage of 97+ gauges???
Most of the ones on brent's site are just for the 93-96. Leaving us 97+'s and TA guys "out in the cold". Perhaps the guys that have made the 93/96 gauges could just duplicate their design and put it on a 97+ AC/HVAC panel. We'd really appreciate it. Thanks guys,
Jay

I'm pretty good at photoshop so I can design some stuff if someone has ideas of what they want.

I just need some help....I can't find any templates for a 98+ T/A or Firebird. I do have a scanner but it's at work. I'm laid off right now so I wouldnt be going in to work. I read another post about someone taking a digital pic of it. I have a Nikon D1x that takes 5.74 or megapixels....so I'm just wondering if I can make a 1:1 of the hvac's somehow?? I want to tie in my flames on the outside to the inside.

BTW...there are papers out there that are archival if people are concerned about the fading. We use the Epson Archival matt paper at work. I guess then you would laminate it. I can get things laminated at the photo lab where i used to work also.

Anyone got any ideas?

Here's a pic of my white HVAC gauges. Pretty easy to do.

After a few of the guys w/ PS made some various gauges, I still didn't see "the one for me", so I mix-and-matched some that they made (I don't know which, or I'd give due credit). But, I took the "Z28" and "LT1" logos from one of the flame gauges, and put them on a regular white gauge, then spent a little while touching up the "font" to make it look sharp.

Needless to say, I pasted the final product in a .doc file so I could get the sizing right.
I got the sizing right and emailed it to brent to post on his site, but he didnt (Brent I can send it again if you want).
So, If any of yall are interested in some white, non-flamed, Z28/LT1 HVAC&Headlight overlays, Email me at Jaybaste7@aol.com and I'll email you the file.
Lata guys,
J

with some resizing in psp I used the 94-96 white speedo overlay. Only thing is. . . I have a 94 v6 (110mph). Does anyone have this template? I customized it, but the markings arent perfect. I'm a heavy photoshop user so anything will work.

Hey Ryan.
To get the sizing right (the dimensions should already be correctly proportioned), covert the file to a jpg or bmp and paste it in a word DOC file.
Then you can resize it in word until it fits correctly- the proportions should stay the same. I just printed out a few black and white copies until i got mine right.

Mine is a White gauge for the HVAC and Headlight that has the "Z28" and "LT1" logos on the HVAC. I have the doc file if you want it. just email me at JayBaste7@aol.com. I emailed it to Brent, but it never made it on the site.

Still no answer to what paper you guys are using. Photo quality, high gloss, hard stock, paper weight, any of this information you can provide would be great. Thanks!

I'm using photo quality glossy. I also put clear contact paper (like a dull clear sticker) over the top of them to keep the shine down and keep them waterproof.

I got a couple of ?'s

1) How do I design my own templates because I have a lot of ideas that have'nt been touched on yet (you guys will love em)

2) If i click and save one of you guys templates, how do print them out to scale? and can I just take them down to the local drug store (Eckerds) on 3.5 floppy and let them print em out on their paper

3) Are there any for 3rd Gen Camaro's?

We need a "main" page on a cardomain page so everyone can download the templates from "one" page and also upload (e-mail page owner) new designs.

Why is this thread DEAD, still someone has yet to post a clear cut DIY Guide as to how to do this process...So if anyone who's good at it, can contact me with some tips, I would greatly appreciate it, and would do some work for people, since some of the request in this post has yet to be fullfilled....As for the 97+ TA Guages I could scan one probably since I have a 97 Cluster I picked up for cheap laying here.....Once again someone who's done this, and can give me a walk through please contact me thanks!

well so no one has come up with a cluster to match the ultra light guages yet? i have cash in hand.. some one direct me or something..

XxXTransAmXxX
12-17-2004, 12:13 PM
Fast Orange, unfortunately in my eyes this thread should be deleted. I am the only one posting, and my original posts were FOREVER ago. All the "people" who say they could do them, I have PM'd with no response...Obviously they aren't to helpful if they posted they could do it in this thread, and wont help out, or even instruct. My guess as to going about this is Scanning your cluster, to scale, and editing it that way. However this is just a shot in the dark, as for no-one's offered me any guidance either. It'd be nice if someone would get together and just make a write up, and host different scans for people to use & pick from...

Fast Orange
12-17-2004, 12:26 PM
well i would think you could just take the cluster to a reputable sticker/vinyl guy and he could scan it in and make it how you wanted it but i wouldnt think that you could see through the vinyl.. unless some one makes a transparent vinyl..or in my case of wanting it to match the auto meter ultra lights i could come up with a alternate light source which would still cause problems as far as abs, ses, and all other warning/indicator lights..

XxXTransAmXxX
12-17-2004, 12:29 PM
Yes, in the "Screen Printed" Vinyls though they start out with a clear sheet, and DYE it to color...So it could be layed out as to have clear areas for the dumby lights. However your local normal "Vinyl" guy wont do a screen print more than likely...

If someone has some dimensions I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm in the middle of doing this myself and by the looks of it someone should do a write up, so I guess I will. I'll also be having a print shop do the printing, most likely on vellum.
