T-5 vs T-56

I've heard the T-5 is lighter than the T-56.Can I get some good and bad things about both trannys?thanks

T-56's can handle a boatload more powerthan the T-5's.

the T-56 is a 6 speed (im sure u knew that) so its gonna get a little better gas mileage,having like 2 overdrives. it can also handle alot more HP than the T-5...ive heard around 450 or so for the T-56 (correct me if im wrong...im not a big manual tranny guy). what are u thinking about putting it behind? like cubic inch...HP...plans in the near futre...etc.

yea, probably 450 - 500 they use those tranny's in the Vipers also.

T-56 handle at least 450 ft*lbs, probably more, .50 6th gear OD weight ~60 lbs more than a T-5

T-5's have "better" shifting IMO, work with stock hydraulics for the clutch. And generally break when slicks and powershifts are applied at any power level.

I've never broke a T-5, but one is definately wounded, I don't powershift anymore and only run street tires. mid 14s sec 305 and low 14 sec 350, drive hard everyday.

T5 is about 98 lbs and rated for between 275 and 325 ft lbs (depending on year and "World Class" or not). The T56 is about 155 lbs and there are a few cars making 700 hp running them with no real trouble (if you "beat them up", they still break).

The Viper version is different than the 4th gen version. It has a larger input (and output as I remember) shaft and several other modifications. But it is a great upgrade from a t5 and teh LT1 version is an easy swap into a 3rd gen. I have put a t5 in an '89 Formula and a T56 in an '84 Camaro. One was not any more difficult than the other.

The Viper also got cast iron shift rods (forks? I don't remember exactly what) while the f bodies got aluminum. If you're going to run a high horse motor, upgrading to the iron version is worth it. I believe there is also a company making them from billet steel, but be prepared to fork out some $$ for those. :)
