Whats the difference? (Class A, B, D, etc...)

Amplifiers,

I am under the impression that the class system is based on the effeciency (sp?) of the amplifier. (power per watt...)
Am I completely wrong?

What are some good Class A Amplifiers?
I need a good 5 channel amp. Nothing insanely loud, just something that will take a line level input and turn in into crisp clear loud sound.

Hope you guys can help!

Simply put the class of amplifier operation describes how the circuit is biased. You can read a little more about it here.

There are no true class A car audio amplifiers. Class A operation is the most inefficient class of operation. Class A/B is what your typical car audio amplifier uses.

Thats really interesting... I had the whole thing backwards...

Thanks for that article, that should go into the proposed FAQ.....

So, class D it is!

Anyone know of some high quality Class D 5-channel amps?

Perhaps comparable to the Alpine V-12.
Is the Phoenix Gold Octane Series any good?

For the most part class D amps are used only for subwoofers. Class D car audio amps are bandwidth limited due to their switching power supplies. Very few, if any, class D car audio amps are full bandwidth. Your best bet is to go with a cllass A/B amp for your main speakers and a class D amp for your subwoofers.
